ESCANABA — On Saturday, a fundraising event at the Escanaba Elks Lodge will raise money for the high school football team and send several people home with big winnings.

The public is welcome to attend the event — a meat raffle that will also give away guns, whisky and cash.

For those unfamiliar, a meat raffle is what it sounds like. In this case, the Escanaba Quarterback Club — a 501(c)(7) that provides for the Eskymos football team — purchased $2,600 worth of meat from Elmer’s County Market, which will be raffled off Saturday afternoon at the Elks #354 Lodge at 510 Ludington St.

From 2 to 6 p.m., a winner of a different package of meat will be drawn every 30 minutes, making for a total of nine packages.

“In each raffle (package), there’ll be at least five significant meat items,” said Escanaba Quarterback Club President Rusty Bluse.

To be given away are bacon, shrimp, hams, lobster tails, hamburger patties and New York strip steaks.

In addition to the meat, two pistols will also be raffled off. Those drawings will take place at 4 and 6 p.m.

Between, at 5 p.m., is the Crown Royal Canadian Whisky raffle.

“We will raffle off the eight most popular flavors of Crown Royal,” Bluse reported.

Two 50/50 raffles will be going on as well.

During the event, the Elks kitchen will be offering a limited menu.

This is the second year the Escanaba Quarterback Club has organized a meat raffle. Their past actions have included co-sponsoring a picnic for veterans and establishing the “Wall of Fame” under the football stadium, to which 109 individuals have been inducted so far. This year, the club will administer a $500 scholarship during the high school’s awards ceremony; according to Bluse, they plan to increase the number of scholarships in the future.
