COVID-19 cases continue to rise in U.P.
ESCANABA State data Friday showed 159 new confirmed COVID-19 positives in the Upper Peninsula in the past two days — including 30 more cases in Delta County and 18 in Menominee County — as the level of COVID-19 activity in the region continues to rise.
Local health officials recorded 26 new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Delta County since Wednesday and 22 new cases in Menominee County.
Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties also raised Menominee County’s probable case count by 17 and Delta County’s probables by 12.
The PHDM website Friday had Delta County at 3,741 confirmed positives, 812 probable cases and 94 deaths. Menominee County has had 1,998 confirmed positives, 449 probables and 41 deaths. The deaths included confirmed and probable.
On the state level, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Friday listed new confirmed positives in all of the Upper Peninsula’s 15 counties: 33 in Marquette County, the 30 in Delta County, 18 in Menominee County, 14 in Iron County, 12 in Mackinac County, 10 in Ontonagon County, nine in Schoolcraft County, seven in both Dickinson and Houghton counties, five each in Chippewa and Gogebic counties, four in Baraga County, three in Alger County and one each in Keweenaw and Luce counties. The state also had a new virus-related death in Mackinac County.
Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 21,739 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 452 deaths.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Friday had Keweenaw County at 152 confirmed cases and 33 probable, and one confirmed death and one probable death; Luce County, 236 confirmed cases and 271 probable, four confirmed deaths and one probable death; Alger County, 357 confirmed, 211 probable and three deaths, four probable; Schoolcraft County, 401 confirmed cases and 101 probable, four deaths and one probable; Ontonagon County, 474 confirmed, 61 probable and 21 deaths, one probable; Mackinac County, 544 confirmed cases and 275 probable, four deaths; Baraga County, 753 confirmed cases, 138 probable and 40 deaths; Iron County, 1,077 confirmed cases and 80 probable, 43 deaths and 10 probable; Gogebic County, 1,165 confirmed cases and 371 probable, 24 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 1,194 confirmed cases and 1,537 probable, and 29 deaths, five probable; Menominee County, 1,994 confirmed cases, 443 probable and 42 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,499 confirmed cases and 473 probable, 59 deaths and 15 probable; Houghton County, 2,692 confirmed cases, 633 probable, 37 deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 3,735 confirmed cases and 809 probable, 76 deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 4,466 confirmed cases, 911 probable and 65 deaths, one probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Friday had 4,448 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of about 2,224 per day for the two days, for a total to date of 955,640. The state Friday added 51 deaths attributed to the virus — including 28 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 20,367.
The state provides new COVID-19 figures on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but will not have an update Monday due to the Labor Day holiday.
