Escanaba library offering free play kits
ESCANABA — The Escanaba Public Library is offering free summer sensory play kits for families with children ages 0-4 who participate in the library’s summer reading program. The kits include items designed to encourage language development and parent-child interaction through tactile play. Participating families will receive a library backpack filled with squish bags, glitter jars, bubbles, play dough and more. Also included are tips from library youth services staff on ways to instill the reading habit and a reading log to record books enjoyed together during the summer.
The kits are funded through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant. Initially intended for use in programs at the library, the sensory play idea was transitioned to take-away kits following the COVID-19 outbreak.
“We are pleased to be able to offer this safe alternative for families to enjoy early literacy activities with their little ones,” said library director, Carolyn Stacey.
A limited number of kits will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To register for the reading program and reserve a kit, call the library at 906-789-7323 beginning Monday, July 20.
