ESCANABA — While teacher contracts in the Escanaba Area Public Schools (EAPS) district technically conclude June 30, today is the last day of classes.

For one local educator, it’s the very last day of teaching after a 40-year career.

The Daily Press published an article on May 22 about Kathy Miron’s journey teaching music, band, English and technology at Mid Pen, Franklin, Ford River, Jefferson, Lemmer, Soo Hill, and Webster Elementary Schools.

Having received comments from EAPS Superintendent Coby Fletcher after the article ran, the Daily Press reproduces his words here:

“I’ve worked with Kathy in her role as teacher and also in her role as president of the Escanaba Education Association. In fact, Kathy was president when I arrived in the District, and she only passed the baton after we concluded negotiations this year,” Fletcher wrote. “Kathy dedicates immense amounts of time to students and staff in the EAPS because she cares about them. At the same time, she has high expectations for kids and colleagues alike. Combining equal measure of care and expectations is a winning formula, and I think Kathy has exemplified those traits. It’s earned her the respect of both students and adults.

“…It’s hard to put the impact of a longtime educator into words, especially one who’s been so involved in the profession. You leave behind a legacy of memories, and your example continues on. I think Kathy’s impact is in her dedication, but also in her determination to see things done the right way. That’s true of both her teaching and her work among her peers. Whether it was kids practicing recorders or ukuleles in the auditorium outside my office door or discussing union topics during our weekly meetings, I can personally attest to that.”

Miron’s role at EAPS upon her retirement is as the music tecaher at the Upper Elementary, which teaches all district students in third, fourth and fifth grades.

Taking over the role next year will be Lisa Bouche, currently a fourth-grade teacher.

Starting at $3.50/week.
