Push-ups for pledges

ESCANABA — Jim Barron, a member of the Escanaba Class of 1959 from Cornell is doing a fundraiser for the class’ scholarship fund in memory of classmates Jerry Rose and Harry Nelson. Barron, who is 81, will be doing 100 full-extension push-ups in 30 minutes at the Cornell Fire Hall on June 15 at 6 p.m. In exchange, he is seeking pledges to support the scholarship.

The scholarship is given out each year and Rose was instrumental in its creation. Nelson was a former art teacher in Escanaba. Like Barron, both men were from Cornell.

Rapid Readers ­discussion June 14

RAPID RIVER — “The Butterfly’s Daughter” by Mary Alice Monroe is the novel for Rapid Readers discussion at the Wednesday, June 14 meeting of the group. The discussion will take place at Jack’s Restaurant in Rapid River at 10 a.m. Suggestions for the July 20 read are “The Hour of the Witch” by Chris Bohjalian or “The Last Flight” by Julie Clark.

Honoree Dinner planned for the Garden Peninsula

GARDEN — Names are being accepted for the annual Honoree Dinner sponsored by the Garden Peninsula Historical Society. The event will be held on Sept. 18 at the Garden Community Center.

To be considered, potential honorees must be a past or present resident of the Garden Peninsula and have reached 80 years of age or older. Names can be submitted to Brenda Tibbetts at 906-644-7609 or email brendatibbetts69@gmail.com. All names must be submitted by July 31.

Wells Lions Club raffle winner named

WELLS — The winner of the Wells Lions Club 52-week raffle for the week of June 6 is Mike Decker, of Escanaba, who won $100. This was week 45 of the raffle.

Father’s Day breakfast

GLADSTONE — American Legion Post 71 of Gladstone will be serving an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19. Fathers get a discount on their meal.

Esky Class of 1972

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Class of 1972 will hold their 50th reunion on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the Marketplace in downtown Escanaba.
