Gladstone boys look for success in 2026 track season

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone boys may not have won their track and field opener, but it was still a big day for them here Thursday. Junior Andrew Karl also made it an historic day by setting the school pole vault record with a winning leap of 14-5 in their own invitational. His latest effort was an inch higher than Josh Syverson’s best jump in 2009 and a personal record by two inches. ESCANABA — With a track and field meet under their belts, the Holy Name Crusaders look to improve through the season. The Crusaders, who opened in Thursday’s Gladstone Invitation, have nine girls and five boys on their roster. RAPID RIVER — There was some concern about how a major snowstorm in mid-March and a long winter would affect area spring sports athletes. “That storm hit us pretty good,” Rapid River boys’ track and field coach Steve Ostrenga said. “It delayed some things, but everybody’s in the same boat.” Rapid River made up for lost time Thursday by finishing runner-up, just three points behind Escanaba (137-134), in the Gladstone Invitational.
