July 27, 1966 -- Ed Gravelle and Dave Erickson shot even-par 36 in the Escanaba Country Club Men's Twilight League. Harry Hogan and Bill Eis, Jr. hit 37 and Elmer Swanson carded a 38.
Bill McGovern fired a one-hitter and struck out 12 as the Merchants moved into first place in the Escanaba Softball Association American League with a 5-2 triumph over Bero Motors. Frank Trotter provided Bero Motors with its lone hit on an inside-the-park home run.
Mead advanced in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League baseball tournament, opening with a 10-3 victory over Harnischfeger Local 632. Kangas, Warren Nye and Bill DuBord had two hits apiece for Mead.
August 1, 1966 -- The Escanaba Cubs captured the Upper Peninsula American Legion baseball title, sweeping past Ishpeming 9-5 and 12-2. Tom Brawley provided the Cubs with five consecutive hits and Dan Mylander added three in the second game. Jim Boyle carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before allowing a two-out double to Mike LeHillier. Roger Wood paced Esky with two hits in the opener.
The Manistique Little League All-Stars rallied past Iron Mountain 10-9 for their first U.P. championship. Doug Erickson and Dick Miller led the winners with three hits each and Jerry Sample and John Gregrush added two apiece.
Rapid River was crowned Lake Superior League Baseball League champion following an 11-2 triumph over Trenary. Punch Johnson, Dave Gilson and manager Poly Viau led Rapid River with three hits apiece and Trenary's Wayne Luzardi clubbed a two-run homer.
Art Richer set a track record and Bob Iverson won the feature race in the modified class in the Upper Peninsula Stock Car Association races at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Richer toured the quarter-mile oval in 19.32 seconds, shaving .06 second off the previous best by Iverson earlier in the evening.
July 27, 1981 -- Fred Sayklly of Escanaba captured the World Logrolling Championship at Hayward, Wis., becoming the first Michigan resident to be crowned champion in 45 years. Sayklly earned the title by defeating defending and nine-time champion Fred Scott of Barrington, Nova Scotia. Dan McDonough of Esky placed third and Lee LeCaptain, also of Esky, took fifth.
Jeff Koch retained his Highland Open golf title, topping a record field of 240 by hitting a two-under par 175 through 45 holes on his home course in the two-day event. Jerry Wiles of Highland was runner-up, followed by Scott Saari of Ishpeming Wawanowin and Dave Douglas of Highland at 180.
The Escanaba Senior Little League All-Stars captured the Upper Peninsula baseball title by defeating Marquette 6-3. Todd Johnson and Scott Peterson shared Esky's mound duties and Mark Gregoire and Tom Hughson had two hits apiece.
July 28, 1981 -- Jim Carlson scattered four hits as Gladstone Murph's Bar edged Powers Leo's Mobil 1-0 in a softball pitcher's duel. Mike Skorupski led Murph's with two hits and Jim Bruce's double drove in the game's only run. John Anderson, who allowed seven hits, took the loss.
July 29, 1981 -- Brian Pelon tossed a one-hitter, fanned 10 and walked three while helping the Gladstone Little League All-Stars advance with a 5-0 triumph over Iron Mountain Central. Pelon, Wes Butch and Craig Ness were Gladstone's offensive leaders with two hits each.
July 30, 1981 -- The Bluff's Marian Tibergien earned medalist honors in the women's Quad Club tournament with an 82 at Highland Golf Club. She was followed by Highland's Karen Wiles 84, Gladstone's Bev Farrell 87 and Esky's Denise Boyle and Bluff's Emmy Erickson 93.
August 1, 1981 -- Rapid River Swallow Inn won for only the third time this season with a 6-4 upset victory over previously undefeated Paquin & Sons in the Country Girls' Softball League. Debbie Martin allowed just four hits and Sherri Feathers had two hits. Cindy Srock had a pair of hits for Paquin & Sons.
