Gladstone swimming battles with Rudyard, Sault Ste. Marie

WELLS — Gladstone swim team had a tri-meet on Friday as they took on Rudyard and Sault Ste. Marie.

The Girls team came in third place with 71 points behind Rudyard with 81 and Sault Ste. Marie with 78. The Gladstone girls did a good job of staying close as Irene Neumeier won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly events. While Aubrey Elliott won the 100-yard freestyle and came in second in the 100-yard backstroke.

The Braves relay team of Neumeier, Thressa Lemire, Ashley Sprietzer and Anabel Niswonger won the 200-yard freestyle event.

The Gladstone boys had a strong meet placing second with 98 points behind Sault Ste. Marie who had 111 points and ahead of Rudyard who finished with 24 points.

Tyler Soderman led the boys team winning the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke events. Gideon Barron placed second in the 200-yard individual medley.

Freshman Everett Cole added a couple second place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events.

The 200-yard freestyle team of Soderman, Connor Howes, Mason Couvillion and Abraham Campbell won by just .06 of a second over Sault Ste. Marie.

The Braves also picked up a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Howes, Barron, Cole and Brandon Bourdeau won by .13 of a second with Brandon holding off a hard charging swimmer from the Sault.

The Braves next meet will be today in Kingsford.
