Sports Flashback June 21-27

June 21, 1966 — Pete Ross tossed a three-hitter, struck out 13 and walked two while leading Insurance to a 4-1 baseball victory over Harnischfeger Local in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. John Daley got two hits for the winners. Harnischfeger pitchers Rick Lancour and Doug Howard combined for seven strikeouts and allowed seven hits.

Flat Rock moved into a first-place tie in the Escanaba Softball League with a 9-7 triumph over the previously unbeaten Escanaba Merchants. Bill Plouff led Flat Rock with three hits, including two triples and four RBIs. Al Erickson and Tony Derkos had two hits each for the Merchants.

June 22, 1966 — Doug Moss blasted two home runs and a triple, helping Rapid River Bill’s Bar romp past Ensign 14-2 in Central League softball. Larry Lundin contributed four hits and Fran Lancour limited Ensign to three hits.

Dave Friets led the way in the Highland Golf Club Men’s Twilight League opening with a two-under-par 34, then adding a 38 in the second round. Mel Manske also carded a 38 with Don Wertz and Jack Smith hitting 39.

Dian Rose ripped a home run and triple as Kiwanis whipped Bay de Noc 29-10 in the Girls’ Softball League. Faye Royer also homered and Carol Lambert and Kris McDonough shared the mound duties.

June 27, 1966 — Manager Poly Viau clubbed a solo home run in the 10th inning, lifting Rapid River past Marquette 5-4 in the Lake Superior Baseball League. Winning pitcher Warren Groleau scattered six hits and fanned nine.

June 22, 1981 — Duke Gardiner of Escanaba set the pace among the late model drivers in a rain-shortened program at the Escanaba Raceway. Gardiner became the fastest qualifier by touring the oval in 16.12 seconds, then won the dash and pursuit races. Clayton Peterson of Rapid River took the checkered flag in another heat race, edging Jim Beauchamp of Flat Rock.

Spud Willis of Esky recorded the fastest time in hobby stock at 20.1, then took a pursuit race over Darrell Gagnon of Esky, and Gary Dubord’s season-debut became successful with a victory in dash.

June 23, 1981 — Big Al’s Bar won its seventh straight in an 11-8 men’s slowpitch softball victory over Universal Auto. Rick Peltonen collected three hits for Big Al’s. Ray and Mike Norkoli added two apiece. Larry Olsen and Bob Burak paced Universal with three hits each and Fred Breitzman rapped a two-run homer.

June 24, 1981 — Lori Eugate’s three-hitter led the way in Flat Rock’s 5-2 softball triumph over Gladstone Credit Union in the Gladstone Girls’ Little League. Flat Rock did all of its scoring in the third inning by taking advantage of eight walks. Lyndel Ingalls and Sherri Thompson shared the mound duties for Credit Union.

Ken Myllyla earned medalist honors in the Escanaba Country Club Men’s Twilight League with 36. Chet Faram shot 37 and Glen Pearson finished with 39.

June 25, 1981 — Jeff Murray tossed a three-hit, leading the Escanaba Bruins to a 5-1 American Legion baseball victory over the Gladstone Indians. Pat Kaski led Esky’s eight-hit attack with three singles. Chuck Zimmerman added a double and a single. Mike Dementer absorbed the loss.

June 26, 1981 — Flossie Strong of Ontonagon gained top honors in the Highland Golf Club Ladies Open tournament with 155 strokes through the two-day event. Gloria Korbuly of Marinette’s Little River Country Club finished runner-up at 160 and Patti Beck of Highland placed third with 170.
