Sports Flashback June 14-20

June 13, 1966 — Dale Bittner tossed a two-hitter as Bero Motors crushed Teamsters 17-0 in American League softball. Roger Martinson led the winners with three hits, including a triple.

June 14, 1966 — Peter Ross fired a two-hitter, struck out 16 and walked five as Insurance posted a 4-1 baseball victory over Teamsters 4-1 in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. Kim Oliver collected three hits off John Moberg, who fanned 11, walked five and gave up seven hits.

June 17, 1966 — State Bank gained sole possession of first place in the Girls’ Softball League with a 6-1 triumph over Lombardi’s. Betty Thorsen tossed a three-hitter and fanned nine. Connie Verhamme absorbed the loss.

June 20, 1966 — Rapid River made its debut in the Lake Superior Baseball League, a successful one in a 5-4 victory over Trenary-Skandia. Doug Moss scored the game-winner on a wild pitch and after Roger Nelson tied the score on a bases-loaded walk. Warren Groleau tossed a three-hitter, whiffed nine and walked two.

Jim Boyle fired a one-hitter and struck out 14 as the Escanaba Cubs swept an American Legion doubleheader with a 3-0 triumph over the Manistique Chiefs. John Way threw a two-hitter and fanned eight in Esky’s 6-1 victory in the opener. Dan Mylander collected four hits and Rick Kuchenberg added two in the twinbill.

June 15, 1981 — Kevin Tapani threw a two-hitter, leading the Escanaba Cubs to a 4-0 triumph over the Esky Bruins in the championship game of the Wolverine Sporting Goods American Legion baseball tournament. Tapani, who struck out 10 and walked three, also had two of the Cubs’ four hits off Dean Altobelli.

Daryl VanDrese cracked a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Escanaba Bears earned a 6-4 victory over Peshtigo, Wis. Mike Mattson scattered seven hits through seven innings and Randy Kleiman allowed two hits in relief. Willy Hillberg led Esky’s offense with two hits.

June 17, 1981 — Chet Faram shot 37 to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Men’s Twilight League. He was followed by Bill Howe, Randy Anzalone, Don Johnson, Bryon Zeni, Bill Corriveau and Gerry Anderson at 39.

Denise Boyle earned medalist honors in the Escanaba Country Club Women’s League with 45. She was followed by Virginia Anzalone, Barb Zeni and Sally Fontaine at 47, Milly Boyce and Shirley Shomin 48 and Marge Owens and Dawn Smith 49.

June 20, 1981 — The Rapid River Lions gained the first-half title in the Gladstone Little League with a 10-0 triumph over Joseph’s Foodland. Andy Schwartz scattered four hits and Allen Viau ripped a triple for Rapid River.
