Meet the racer: Eric Mathieson

ESCANABA — As we hit the midway point of June, today we get to know Escanaba Speedway street stock driver Eric Mathieson who is showing his support for his fellow racers. Mathieson currently sits second in points, 11 behind the leader Jason Piron who had a tight race with Mathieson on Saturday. Mathieson has finished second three consecutive weeks, and will be back in action Saturday at the Christian Groleau Memorial Race as he seeks win number one of the season.

Escanaba Daily Press sports writer Adam Hinch had a chance to catch up with Mathieson for this week’s Q&A.

Adam Hinch: What got you into racing?

Eric Mathieson: I used to help my friends with their off-road truck and have been in it ever since.

AH: How many years have you been racing?

EM: This is my 15th year this season.

AH: What is your favorite sport outside of racing?

EM: I got to go with football.

AH: What is your favorite NFL team?

EM: Packers.

AH: Who is your favorite Packers player?

EM: Probably between Brett Favre, Dorsey Levens or Reggie White.

AH: What is your favorite soda?

EM: Mountain Dew.

AH: Burgers and brats or fish fry?

EM: Burgers and brats.

AH: What is the funnest part of racing for you?

EM: Family. My mom, my brother and my girlfriend all come out to watch and I get to race against my dad and get to watch my daughter race.

AH: What is the most memorable moment in racing so far?

EM: Winning with my kids there to watch and being around the family.
