Gladstone baseball drops 2 of 3 in the Dells

MAUSTON, Wis. –Gladstone made the trip to Mauston, Wisconsin for a trio of games this weekend. Here’s what went down:

Lake Mills 11, Gladstone 1

The Braves claimed their lone run off a sacrifice fly from Rex Kelly in the top of the third. Casey Alworden earned the Braves’ lone hit. Gladstone committed three errors in the game.

Cooper Sanville allowed seven runs (two earned) off eight hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts across four innings. Gavin Frossard allowed four earned runs off three hits with six walks and a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Gladstone 8, Flambeau 2

The Braves washed the taste of its first loss of 2024 out of its mouth immediately against Flambeau.

Kelly earned another sacrifice RBI, this time coming via groundout in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Sanville stole home in the ensuing at bat, which turned into an RBI groundout by Trevor Thorbahn for a 3-0 lead.

With the lead down to 3-1 after four innings, the Braves erupted down to the last out in their half of the fifth.

Thorbahn cranked a 1-2 pitch for a two-run single and a 5-1 lead. Thorbahn scored off an error during Austin Pepin’s ensuing at bat for a 6-1 lead. Pepin then scored off a Frossard single for a 7-1 advantage. With the bases loaded and facing a 3-1 count, Alworden refused to be aggressive, opting instead to draw ball four and score Frossard for an 8-1 lead.

Thorbahn finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and tossed a scoreless seventh inning, allowing two walks and struckout one. Pepin claimed the win, allowing two earned runs off six hits with two walks and three punchouts across six innings.

Fond du Lac 18, Gladstone 2

Fod du lac opened an 8-0 lead after four innings.

Owen Mattonen led off the Gladstone half of the fifth with a six-pitch walk. Then Alworden blasted a 1-2 pitch to third base, which resulted in an error that scored Mattonen and Alworden to pull within six runs.

Fond du Lac scored 10 runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Sanville finished 2-for-2. Kelly, Frossard and Nate Young also registered base hits. Young also took the loss, allowing five earned runs off two hits, issuing six walks in one inning on the mound. Thorbahn allowed three earned runs off six hits while allowing four walks and fanning three in four innings of relief.

The Braves host Negaunee for a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
