Escanaba tennis victorious over Westwood

ESCANABA — The Escanaba boys tennis team returned to their home courts Thursday afternoon as they defeated Westwood 6-2.
Escanaba junior Brett Swanson had a good day at No. 2 doubles as he defeated Westwoods’s Evan Hebert 6-0, 6-0.
“It was a little windy today but it was good overall,” Swanson said. “My game felt really on point, a little sore but it was a good day.”
Escanaba sophomore Kyle Smith also had a productive day at No. 3 singles as he defeated Caeden Nurmi 6-1, 6-0 in two sets.
“I came in looking to play my best,” Smith said. “I was just working hard to do what I can do. We have been playing well as a team right now.”
Escanaba sophomore Chris Economopoulos had a hard fought match against Westwood’s Caden Balzarini at No. 1 singles dropping the first set 1-6 then came back to take the second set 6-4 before falling 6-1 in the third.
The Eskymos were dominant in doubles action as they won all four matches. Logan Stephens and Jacob Prey defeated Ethan Marta and Jacob Ridi at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-3.
“I was just making simple shots and keeping the ball alive,” Prey said. “We all work well as a team and I think we can make an impact at the GNC’s this season.”
Willy Derkos and Brady McIntyre held on for a three-set win over Deion Johnson and Brody Aronson after losing the first set 3-6. They responded winning the last two sets 6-4, 6-3.
