Cubs pull ahead late, top Indians

ESCANABA — The action kicked off in the last two innings between Gladstone and Escanaba Friday in Escanaba.

The Cubs scored twice in the seventh to edge the Indians 7-6.

Down 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Cubs ground and popped out, and the Indians were just one out away from clinching the win.

Esky’s Ben Johnson stepped up and drove home Bon LaChance on a line drive single to tie the game at 6.

Then, Lennox Peacock, who closed the game for the Cubs in relief, hit another line drive to right to score Johnson for the walk-off.

Through the first five innings, Gladstone led 2-1 and added three more in the top of the sixth.

The Cubs scored four in the bottom of the sixth on hits from Nick Kolich, Peacock and Eli Gardner.

Peacock earned the win for the Cubs over one and one-third innings, allowing two hits, two walks and one run while striking out two.

Johnson finished the game with two RBIs and one hit. Gardner, Chase Cloutier and Peacock all collected one RBI.
