Escanaba sweeps Norway
NORWAY — The Escanaba softball team finished its six-day, 12-game endurance stretch with a sweep of Norway (5-0, 14-0) here Thursday.
The nightcap ended after five innings, with the Eskymos earning two or more runs per inning to seal the game — three in the first, two in the second and third, five in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
McKayla Mott went the distance on the mound for Esky and was one hit away from a no-hitter as she struck out 10. She also notched six RBIs and three hits.
Paxton Bullen earned three RBIs and three hits, and Erica Moore and Lizzy Sliva each collected one.
The opener went the distance, with a drought for both teams in the first two innings.
The Eskymos broke the stalemate in the top of the third as Abby Hill sacrificed to give Carley McInerney the opportunity to cross home.
Escanaba picked up one more in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh to seal the game.
In the fifth, it was Bullen’s fly doubles that scored Carsyn Segorski to put the Eskymos ahead 2-0.
They went up 3-0 in the sixth as Mott scored thanks to an Anna Boutilier sacrifice.
Grayson LaMarche took the win for the Eskymos over seven, allowing just four hits and striking out 17.
Bullen, Carney Salo, Boutilier and Hill each notched one RBI.
Escanaba travels to the Blue Chip Tourney in Grand Rapids today to face Oakridge and Jenison.
