Jets and Cougars split
EBEN — North Central and Superior Central split the day, with the Cougars taking the opener 4-3 and the Jets rebounding in the nightcap 12-1 Thursday in Eben.
The nightcap only went four innings, with North Central’s Luke Gorzinski taking the mound and giving up the only run due to a hit batter and an error in the second inning.
The Jets piled on the runs, two in the first, five in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth.
Adrian Mercier finished with two hits and five RBIs and also pitched the last one and one-third innings in relief for the Jets. Alex Naser collected two RBIs and went 3-4 at the plate.
In the opener, down 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, the Cougars strung together a single, double and triple to jump ahead 4-2.
The Jets scored one more as Bradey Anderson crossed home to make it 4-3, but despite loading the bases with one out remaining, Superior Central’s Hayden Rockhill extracted the final two outs on the mound to halt the Jets’ rally.
Jesse Sampson gave up six hits and three earned runs while striking out five for the Jets. Mercier finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Parker Maki earned the win for the Cougars, allowing four hits and five walks.
North Central visits Escanaba today, and Superior Central hosts Forest Park Wednesday.
