E-TC’s Borseth selected as Mr. U.P. Basketball

MARQUETTE — Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jaden Borseth achieved a major milestone this season and received his due during the annual basketball meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association here Tuesday.

The senior cager, who scored 2,073 points during his prep career, was named Mr. Basketball as the overall Player of the Year in the U.P. for 2022.

His scoring total ranks him seventh all-time among the boys in the U.P.

The overall U.P. boys’ record (2,286) was achieved a year ago by Iron Mountain’s Foster Wonders.

Borseth also holds E-TC’s boys’ scoring record, which is 58 short of the overall school record by Allison Bailey from 1994-97.

He averaged 18.7 points a game while leading the Panthers to the Division 4 state finals where they dropped a 56-45 overtime decision to Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian.

The Panthers recovered from a mid-season hiccup in plenty of time to finish 23-4 and receive U.P. Team of the Year honors. They were led by Coach of the Year Brad Besonen.

Escanaba was selected Team of the Year in Division 1-2, with Menominee gaining top honors in D-3.

Menominee also finished 23-4 after dropping a 59-49 decision to Schoolcraft in the state finals.

The Maroons were led by senior guard Aidan Bellisle, who averaged 25 points and was selected Player of the Year in Division 1-3, and guided by Coach of the Year Sam Larson.

Also nominated for Coach of the Year were Esky’s Tracy Hudson and Westwood’s Luke Gray.

The Eskymos (19-5) reached the D-2 regional final at Petoskey where they bowed to Cadillac 54-45.

Esky’s leader was 6-foot-9 senior Colin Hudson, who scored 418 points for a 19.9 average and hit 79 percent of his free throws, joining Bellisle and Borseth on the Dream Team.

Bellisle was selected Great Northern Conference Player of the Year, and Borseth earned that honor in the Copper Mountain Conference.

Additional Dream Team picks were Westwood senior Zach Carlson and Painesdale Jeffers senior John Schutz.

Carlson, selected WestPAC and Mid-Peninsula Conference Player of the Year, averaged 24.4 points, 9 1/2 assists and four steals and was a 48-percent field goal shooter.

Schutz averaged 19.4 points and 7.4 assists.

Rudyard senior E.J. Suggitt was named Player of the Year in the Straits Area and Eastern U.P. Conferences with Munising senior Jesse Duran gaining the top honor in the Skyline Central Conference.

Suggitt, an All-U.P. first-team pick in D-4, scored a school-record 1,442 points during his prep career and continue his baseball career at Spring Arbor College in Ann Arbor.

Duran averaged 12 1/2 points, 9 1/2 rebounds, 2 1/2 blocked shots, 4 1/2 assists and nearly three steals and landed a D-4 second-team berth.
