Emeralds top Braves in OT

GLADSTONE — The Manistique Emeralds girls basketball team (3-11) won an overtime thriller 51-47 over the Gladstone Braves (4-10) Monday night in Gladstone.

It was the second time in as many meetings the two have gone to overtime. The last time they played, Jan. 27, also featured overtime but finished with the opposite result.

“We went into overtime when they were at our place, so we knew it was going to be a close game, a competitive game,” said Manistique coach Jenna Nagy. “How we finished it tonight shows how much the girls have grown and their composure. And that’s the biggest thing we talked about, being aware of how much time is left, how many fouls can we get, do we need to rush it and things like that.

“So, I think tonight the victory is super sweet because we were able to get a little bit of revenge for last time.”

This time, the Emeralds staged a late fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime as they came back from eight points down with 2:10 to tie it at 44 with 20 seconds left. The run was anchored by 10 points from Brooke St. John in the quarter.

In OT, Macy Green hit a three to put the Emeralds up just 16 seconds in. Danielle Lund followed her teammates’ lead a minute and a half later with two more points.

The Braves had some fire left, however, as Freshman Tia Schone hit a three to bring the game back within reach 49-47.

St. John, however, would go to the line with nine seconds left shooting one and one in bonus. She put both in to seal the 51-47 victory.

“She is one of our most consistent free throw shooters,” Nagy said. “… It’s nice to see her keep it together and hit those down the line.”

As a whole, however, Nagy was happy with her team’s performance.

“As a team, together, we just pulled it all together and were able to fix our mistakes at halftime, and it looked great,” she said.

Claire van Ginhoven put up 19 points for the Braves in the game, while Veronica Hall and Tia Schone had nine and eight apiece.

In the game, and the season as a whole, the Braves have been struggling to find a guiding voice on the floor said coach Andy Cretens.

“We’re struggling with leadership. We just don’t have one or two or three or whatever players to step up and be leaders in big moments when we need them to when we’re not going the right way,” Cretens said. We need someone to do that. When we were at Westwood, they were up by like 15 or something, and we got it back down to seven. And Natalie Prophet turned to her girls and said, ‘Hey! We need to wake up,’ and we don’t have that. … We’re lacking that leadership, and that’s killing us right now.”

Cretens hopes the Braves can use this moment as a wake up of sorts to turn things around heading into the postseason.

“It’s kind of a moment to reflect and to make a decision and kind of a wake up moment,” he said. “Are we going to let things snowball from here or say this is our bottom point, and are we going to go up from here and wake up and make something happen in the playoffs? It’s kind of that point where we need to make a decision and start figuring it out.”

The Braves are back in action on the road today as they head to Ishpeming to battle the Hematites, while Manistique host the Rapid River Rockets in Manistique.
