8 Broncos grapplers moving to regionals

WEST ISHPEMING — Eight Bark River-Harris wrestlers are moving on to the Division 4 regional tournament after placing in the top four of their respective weight classes in the individual district here Saturday.

Four Broncos were crowned champions, including seniors Avry Corrigan at 112 pounds and Wyatt Raab (160) and juniors Dillon Raab (145) and Drew Allgeyer (189).

Corrigan pinned Manistique junior Dollon Hayes in three minutes, 41 seconds after trailing 5-4 early in the second period.

“I knew I had to wrestle smart,” said Corrigan. “I also knew it was going to be a tough match. This definitely gives me some confidence heading into next week. I think I proved I deserve to be a number one seed. It’s going to be tough downstate, but I think we’ll pull it off. We just have to wrestle tough and smart.”

Dillon Raab hung on for an 8-5 victory over Iron Mountain junior Evan Haferkorn.

“I’m just coming off a shoulder injury and took my time coming back,” said Dillon. “I was going after my opponents instead of waiting for them to come after me. Evan is a very good wrestler. That was a tough match. This is a big confidence boost, but I can’t be satisfied. I’m going to have to bring it again next week.”

Wyatt Raab then pinned Charlevoix sophomore Trevor Streeter with three seconds left in the second period.

“I was trying to conserve my energy,” said Wyatt. “The first takedown set the tone. Getting the first takedown helps you through the match. He’s a pretty strong kid. At first, he was coming at me, but I knew mentally he was very worn down in the end.”

Allgeyer won by technical fall (17-2) over Ishpeming senior Dawson Delongchamp.

“I just focused on my offense and scored as many points as I could,” said Allgeyer. “I knew what my bracket was coming in and what to expect. This is another little step along the way. The post-season is just a time to sharpen your skills and get ready for the state tournament.”

BR-H freshman Paul Smith (103) and junior Brenden Siedlecki (112) placed third and sophomore Elliot Corrigan (130) and junior David Mosse (152) took fourth.

Manistique senior Mckabe Swanson reached the 285 final, where he got pinned in 62 seconds by Newberry senior Mathias Miller.

Emeralds’ junior Jacob Berry (152) took third, and classmate Reece McQuarrie (119), sophomore Michael Bouche (215) and freshman John Weber (103) were fourth.

Senior Spencer Harvala (215) became Westwood’s lone champion by pinning Charlevoix sophomore Adam Streeter at 2:38.

“I just continued to work hard as I have all season,” said Harvala, an all-state (Division 7-8), All-U.P. (large school) and All-WestPAC Conference selection in football last fall. “I got a bye into the semifinals and didn’t get to see many wrestlers. Right now, I’m more motivated than anything.”

Senior Jaeger Wilson (130) represented Ishpeming in the winner’s circle after pinning Charlevoix junior Sam Fry in 3:38.

Iron Mountain sophomore Alexander Wilson (103) pinned freshman teammate and reigning Mid-Peninsula Conference champion Shayna Wilson at 4:54.

Additional champions for the Mountaineers were seniors Isaac Manier (140), Parker Stround (152), junior Shawn McGuire (119) and sophomore Fulton Stroud (171).

Iron Mountain and BR-H meet in the opening round of Wednesday’s team regional, followed by Saturday’s individual regional, both at Charlevoix.

“The team regional should be fun,” said Allgeyer. “I think it’s going to come right down to the end. I pretty well know who’s going to be at the individual regional. I’m pretty well prepared for that, too. It all boils down to execution. There are no more take backs at this point.”

Wyatt Raab said he’s also looking forward to this week’s meets.

“We’ll get little of traveling in,” he added. “I’ll be wrestling one of my friends in the team regional and the number one wrestler in the state in the individual tournament. I’m excited about that.”
