Gladstone grapplers top BR-H, Eskymos

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone wrestlers celebrated Parents’ Night here Thursday by topping Bark River-Harris 51-28 and Escanaba 50-27.

BR-H gained a split by rallying past Esky 46-36, marking the first time it had beaten the Eskymos in a dual meet.

Gladstone’s Hunter Potier electrified the hometown crowd, erasing an 11-point deficit with a buzzer-beating pin of BR-H’s Drew Allgeyer in the second period of a 215-pound bout.

“Hunter just kept grinding and going,” said Braves coach Jeff Brazeau. “Bark River-Harris was down some guys,

and we were missing a few. Joe (coach Racicot) does a good job over there. We got some good matches and gained some confidence going into Saturday’s tournament (at Benzie Central).”

A near fall gave Allgeyer a 14-3 advantage late in the second period. Potier then got a reversal, setting the stage for the match-winning pin.

In the evening’s first match, Gladstone’s Conner Britton (112) recorded a third-period takedown in a come-from-behind 5-4 triumph over BR-H’s Avry Corrigan.

Corrigan took a 4-0 lead on a reversal 30 seconds into the second frame.

Britton got on the board with a reversal late in the second and climbed within 4-3 with an escape 30 seconds into the third.

Drew Hanson (119) and Austin Solis (125) then recorded pins ahead of three forfeits for a 33-0 advantage.

Dillon Raab (145), Noah Gagne (152) and Wyatt Raab (160) followed with pins, bringing the Broncos within 33-18.

Cole Potier (171) got the Braves back on track by pinning Kaleb Gagne in 46 seconds.

In the nightcap, Adam Belanger’s (140) technical fall (15-0) over Caden Smith gave the Braves a 20-0 lead over Esky.

The Eskymos quickly climbed within 20-18 on pins by Adam Reimer (145), Drew Griffin (152) and Tor Spets (160).

Cole Potier (171) gave Gladstone a 26-18 cushion by pinning Tom Neumann in 50 seconds before Aubree Croasdell (189) took a forfeit to shave Esky’s deficit to 26-24.

Gladstone secured the decision by taking the next three bouts, with Hunter Potier and Brett Boudreau (285) recording pins and Adam Spriks (103) getting a forfeit for a 44-24 advantage.

“Both teams wrestled hard,” said Esky coach Jeff Wright. “Gladstone and Bark River-Harris have very good teams. There were a lot of exciting matches. When the Delta County teams get together, anything can happen. We wrestled tough. The kids didn’t quit. We gave it our best shot.”

Esky’s Eli Gardner (119) pinned Brenden Siedlecki in 38 seconds, and Charley McInerney (125) pinned Elliot Corrigan in 61 seconds for a quick 12-0 lead.

The Eskymos then took the next three weight classes by forfeit for a seemingly-comfortable 30-point cushion.

Dillon Raab (145) got the Broncos onboard by pinning Trenton Turchin in 71 seconds in the first of eight straight victories.

In the next bout, Noah Gagne (152) pinned Drew Griffin in 35 seconds.

Wyatt Raab (160) pushed his season record to 22-0 with a technical fall (15-0) over Neumann.

“We came out a little flat against Gladstone,” said Wyatt, who finished 35-2 last season. “Although, they’re a good team this year. We came out better against Escanaba. I knew I had momentum coming into this season. It’s just a matter of doing what you do best.”

BR-H gained the upper hand on Allgeyer’s technical all over Jarret Olsen, and Lane Nehring (285) gave the Broncos a 40-30 lead by pinning A.J. Hart at 2:48.

The Broncos, who are sending wrestlers to Kingsford and Freedom, Wis. Saturday, secured the decision with a forfeit at 103.

Esky resumes Thursday by hosting Negaunee, Westwood and Kingsford.
