NORWAY — Chalk up another cross country victory for Landry Koski.

The Mid Peninsula senior won for the fourth straight time here, covering the 3.1-mile course in a season-best 21 minutes, 23.6 seconds in Monday’s Norway Invitational.

She was followed by Munising junior Monique Brisson (21:59.2) and senior Jenna Matson (22:09.8) on this cloudy and seasonably cool day at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds.

“This was a big race and a good time for me,” said Koski. “I felt real good and noticed my pace was faster after the first mile. Then when I heard my two-mile split (13:26), I knew I was on pace for a better time. This is definitely a confidence boost, especially with the U.P. Finals coming up pretty soon. This makes me feel better.

“It’s tough running with just the golf cart in front of me. Although, I always know the Munising girls are right there. They help keep me going.”

Munising, which placed five in the top 10, was crowned champion with 18 points. Runner-up Stephenson had 40.

The Stephenson boys took five of the top eight spots and won with 25 points, followed by Norway 58, Munising 61 and North Central 84.

Munising junior Hattie Cota continued to progress following ACL surgery this summer, taking fourth in the girls’ race at 23:13.6.

“I’m getting stronger, and I keep working for it,” she said. “Landry and Daisy (Englund) made me the runner I am, and I don’t think I’d be running right now if coach (Fran) DesArmo didn’t tell me I could be one of the best.”

North Central sophomore Gracie Kleikamp placed sixth in a personal-best 23:57.4. Rapid River freshman Emma Sundling took eighth (24:40), and Florence senior Kiera Sullivan was 11th (25:22.1).

“We had a lot of PRs (personal records),” said North Central coach Mike Jenkins. “Gracie ran real well today. That was an awesome performance on her part.”

Munising freshman Trevor Nolan won the boys’ race (17:55.2), followed by senior teammate Kaelan Mulye (18:44.5) and Stephenson junior Griffin Brown (19:42.8).

“I was pretty happy, especially with my teammate (Mulye) getting a PR,” said Nolan. “I start pretty fast because I want to get out in front. Then, I kind of settle into a pace. Now, I’ve got to get some good workouts in this week.”

Munising coach Mark Kinnunen was happy with the team’s performance.

“Trevor has a lot of natural ability,” he said. “He can play football, then win a cross country meet. I don’t think I’ve ever had an athlete who puts in as much time as Kaelan. He trains more during the off-season than most kids do. It’s the same story for the girls. No matter how well they do, they want to get better. Most people expect them to do well, and the tradition drives them for sure.”

Freshman Joe Carlson became Holy Name’s first varsity runner to medal in this new era, placing sixth in 20:08.7.

“I felt much better than last week,” said Carlson, who ran for the first time in the Gladstone Invitational after missing more than six weeks due to a broken arm. “This gives me a boost going into next week. Being the first one from Holy Name to medal this year is pretty cool. It was nice for running. It wasn’t too hot.”

Junior Brent Lagina was Norway’s leader in ninth (21:06.3), followed by freshman teammate Cole Davy (21:14.5) and North Central junior Jesse Sampson in a personal-best 21:15.1.

“I’m proud of the way our kids performed,” said Norway coach Rae Anne Seat. “Our middle school girls are undefeated this year. We were running without our eighth-graders who were playing in a basketball tournament at Forest Park and the North Central boys did a nice job winning the middle school meet.”
