Braves sweep XC

MANISTIQUE — Drew Hughes continued his winning ways on the cross country trails here Wednesday, earning his fourth individual title in as many meets this season.

The Gladstone senior covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 13.92 seconds on this seasonably cool and windy day at the Schoolcraft County Fairgrounds.

“There were a lot of sharp turns, and it was tough with the wind,” he said. “I just kind of battled through it. I started out with a solid pace and gave it my all. Eventually, I want to get down into the 16s. The sand hill (shortly after the mile mark) was tiring but fun. Fortunately, I got a chance to relax a little on the downhill and held a nice, steady pace. My brother (Aaron) ran good. Overall, it was fun.”

Gladstone also took the team championship with 44 points, followed by Stephenson 55 and Mackinaw City 84.

The Gladstone girls also won with 50 points, and Engadine edged Superior Central 132-137 for runner-up honors.

Mackinaw City junior Lars Huffman was boys’ runner-up at 18:21.78, followed by Munising freshman Trevor Nolan (18:56.5) and Engadine junior Conrad Spieles (18:58.99).

“The downhill was pretty nice,” said Huffman. “I was able to get some energy back. It was hard to push yourself in the sand going uphill. I was pretty close with him (Hughes) for a half-mile, then he pulled away.”

Gladstone sophomore Tanner Howes took fifth (19:00.32). Freshman Aaron Hughes was seventh in a personal-best 19:57.2) and Grant Mason was Manistique’s pacesetter in eighth (20:13.7).

Menominee junior Attica Brandt, who said she liked the weather conditions, gained her first varsity victory in 22:26.66. She was followed by Mid Peninsula senior Landry Koski (22:28.53), Munising’s Monique Brisson (22:47.21), Menominee senior Hayden Buck (23:23.04) and Gladstone senior Lilly Karl (23:42.12).

“Hayden and I run together and kind of help each other out,” she added. “This is the first time I’ve run here. The course was confusing with all the turns. It was a nice flat course, except it was hard to run up the sand hill.”

Koski appeared to have a commanding lead more than halfway through the race prior to some confusion on one turn.

“She (Brandt) went the right way, and I was sent the wrong way,” said Koski. “I had a real big gap, then I ran the width of the barn and realized I was going the wrong way. I ended up stopping to get directions. I tried to keep the lead but couldn’t regain my momentum.”

Freshman Emma Sundling was Rapid River’s leader in ninth (24:40.92).
