Area teams fall behind at N. Dickinson Invite

FELCH TOWNSHIP — Area track and field teams finished well behind the leaders in the North Dickinson Invitational here Monday.

The Stephenson girls were crowned champions with 180.9 points. They were followed by North Dickinson 102, Florence-Niagara, Wis. 84 and Carney-Nadeau 31.2.

“I thought our girls performed great,” said Stephenson coach Kate Kuntze. “We have a big team (in numbers). We have depth in the field events and a lot of younger sprinters. Although, I would like to see our times come down in the 100 (meter) hurdles. We’re just happy to have a season. Last year, we got shut down after a week (due to COVID-19).”

The Stephenson boys also won with 139 points, followed by Florence-Niagara 112 and Norway 95. North Central paced area teams in fifth at 43.

“This was our first look at many of our regional teams,” said Eagles’ coach Logan Carlson. “I thought we looked real well.”

Stephenson senior Paige Cappaert won shot put at 30 feet, 6 1/2 inches and discus (87-8) and helped the winning 1600 and 3200 relays.

Classmate Kylie Kuntze, also a part of the 3200 relay, added firsts in the 1600 at six minutes, 18.7 seconds and 3200 (13:56.4) and Sophomore Daisy Grinsteiner captured pole vault (7-9).

Junior Ashton Hord led North Dickinson, winning the 100 (13.8), 200 (28.94) and 400 (1:06.5) and placing second in long jump (13-6 1/2) with classmate Vanessa Lindholm taking the 800 (2:49.8).

“It felt pretty good to get under 29 in the 200,” said Hord. “The wind on the back stretch didn’t help at all. It usually goes against you. I need to work on my starts, although I’m definitely somebody who catches up in the end. In the 400, I just try to catch the people who are in front of me.”

Florence-Niagara junior Audrey Selden won the 100 hurdles (17.2) and 300s (54.3) and helped the winning 400 relay.

Senior Alyssa Cretton added a first in high jump (4-10), and sophomore Morgan Borchardt copped long jump (13-9) with both also part of the 400 relay.

C-N junior Malorie Baumler was runner-up in shot (29-7) and disc (79-1/2). Freshman Samantha Kedsch took third in the 100 (14.4), and eighth-grader Mariska Laurila was third in disc (69-11 1/2).

Superior Central junior Riley Johnson and Stephenson freshman Jada Kuntze shared second in high jump (4-4), and classmate Emma Rutter took third in shot (28-1/2).

Stephenson sophomore Spencer Coldren captured boys’ pole vault with a personal-best leap of 11-6 and the 400 (57.0) and helped the winning 1600 relay.

“I was hoping to get 12, although the wind was blowing with us which gave us an advantage pushing off,” he said. “That gave us more speed. The meet officials were helping everybody. They told me what I needed to do to get better. In the 400, I like to conserve energy until the final 100, then take off.”

The Eagles also swept the relays.

“For not getting to vault last year, Spencer is doing well,” said Carlson. “He has a lot of natural ability and going up six inches to a foot every week. I think we have more good things to look forward to. We have a lot of young kids and talent.”

Florence-Niagara sophomore Blake Smith took the 110 hurdles (16.5) and 300s (44.3) and long jump (18-6 3/4). Junior Patrick Milan added firsts in the 100 (11.4) and 200 (23.8), and classmate Evan Bruemmer captured shot put (36-0).

Junior Aidan Richards provided Norway with a victory in discus (95-5), and senior Zach Seat won high jump (5-6).

Forest Park senior Mason Rintala won the 3200 in a personal-best 10:42.2, 1600 (4:47.3) and 800 (2:10.7).

“Going into the wind in the back stretch was a little challenging, although we had perfect conditions for distance running,” said Rintala. “I like the mile (1600) the best. My grandpa likes to see me run the mile, and I enjoy doing it.”

North Central junior Wyatt Raab placed second in shot (33-8), and senior Daniel Dani was runner-up in pole vault (9-0) and third in the 800 (2:28.8).

Junior Trent Naser provided the Jets with a third in the 300 hurdles (45.0) and tied for third with Norway senior Gabe Hautamaki (12.0).

“There was a baseball game and went up there with just six guys,” Jets’ coach Cherie Granquist said in a telephone interview. “We made a good showing for just having six kids. Wyatt just recently joined the team and did pretty well. Daniel was using a new pole and kind of struggling but still had a pretty good jump. The sprint relays did okay, and Trent and Elijah (Gorzinski) did well in the 100. I’m just grateful they held the meet, and we got to participate.”

C-N senior Tim Hodson was runner-up in the 110 hurdles (17.7) and 300s (44.8).
