Esky boys sweep Miners
NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba baseball team picked up two wins over Negaunee (8-0, 14-6) Friday in Negaunee.
“It was a good day,” said Eskymos coach Scott Hanson. “I thought we got a chance to have a lot of kids in different positions.”
After the Eskymos shut out the Miners 8-0 in the opener, the Eskymos took another early lead in the nightcap.
In the top of the first, two Esky runners (Nick Kolich, Tyler Lawson) crossed home plate thanks to pitching errors.
Escanaba added one more in the third thanks to a hard ground ball from Casey Bray that scored Bryant Maki.
The Eskymos built up a hefty lead in the top of the fourth that was kicked off by a Lawson grounder that scored Ben Johnson. Esky piled four more on to lead 8-0 at the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom, the Miners scored two to cut their deficit to 8-2 and reined in the Eskymos in the fifth while adding another four runs to move within two (8-6).
However, the Eskymos sealed it in the top of the sixth with a six-run inning.
Trent Lawson earned the win for the Eskymos over three-inning, allowing no hits, no runs and two walks while striking out three.
“Trent Lawson had a phenomenal day,” Hanson said. “He played right field in the first game and got a double play (throwing out the runner trying to take second.) He showed off a real strong arm.”
Bray finished with two RBIs, and Tyler Lawson, Collin Arnt and Kolich all finished with one apiece. Bray, Johnson and Tyler Lawson collected two hits each.
Hanson noted Bray’s performance at the plate.
“Casey Bray had two hits both in the second game,” he said. “So, it was nice to see him get his bat going.”
In the opener, the Eskymos jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead after the third inning. They added one more apiece in the fifth and sixth to finish the shut out.
Jared Hanson earned the win for Esky over two innings, allowing one hit while striking out five. Ben Johnson pitched four in relief, giving up just one hit and five walks while striking out four.
Trent Lawson finished with three RBIs and two hits, and LaFave, Maki and Hunter Lancour all added an RBI apiece.
The Eskymos are now 7-0 this season.
“We’re just going to keep it rolling. Hopefully, the weather holds out for us, and we can play some baseball next week, “Hanson said. “The boys are having a great time and playing good baseball.
“The big thing is just throwing strikes. We have a luxury that a lot of teams don’t have, and pretty much everyone we put out there is doing that.”
The Eskymos will play the Flivvers in Kingsford on Tuesday.
