The Escanaba softball team played a series downstate Saturday, finishing the weekend 2-1. The Eskymos dropped their weekend opener against St. Joseph 10-7, they got revenge from a Friday loss (6-4) against Jackson Northwest 7-1 and earned a late win against Three Rivers 11-9.

Esky took an early lead against St. Joseph, leading 7-2 after three innings.

St. Joseph then hit its stride and held the Eskymos to no runs while earning nine more of their own to seal the game.

“They changed pitchers after three (innings). She had a pretty good changeup that the girls failed to adjust to,” Esky coach Andy Fields said.

Freshman Anna Boutilier also earned an RBI triple for her first high school at-bat.

In the revenge win against Jackson Northwest, the Eskymos stayed consistent with scoring, earning one or two runs in four of six and a half innings. Combined with defense that saw Jackson score just one run in the sixth, Esky triumphed.

Boutilier made herself known again, earning her first home run in the third.

“For any Freshman to hit a 220-foot home run to dead center on a pitcher of that caliber we were facing, it’s special,” Fields said. “McKayla Mott, in her first career high school start, pitched phenomenal and got her first career win. One pitch got away from her that went over the fence, but a lot of her pitches were biting down. They (Jackson) struggled with it.”

For the weekend nightcap, the Eskymos used a high production seventh inning to rally and top Three Rivers.

Entering the top of the seventh, Esky trailed 9-4, but an early triple and then a single allowed Esky’s Peyton Bullen to earn an RBI and begin the rally.

“Our defense at times was spotty in game three, but I think the fatigue of playing three games back-to-back-to-back was taking its toll,” Fields said. “So for us to play to the final out is quite an achievement and the cherry on top for the weekend.”

After an error landed another Esky runner and a strikeout, it was Carsyn Segorski’s time to shine as she smashed the ball over the center-field fence to drive in three runs and move the Eskymos within one (9-8).

An error and a single later, Nicole Kamin earned an RBI double to tie the game at nine.

Boutilier then doubled to drive in two more and give Esky the lead to seal the game.

“Overall, coming out of the weekend 2-2, I couldn’t be more happy,” Fields said. “We got every girl on the field.

“Players and coaches both have things to work on, but at the end of the day, we learned we can really be a good team moving forward if we keep grinding.”
