Broncos split IM
Matt “Sweets” McCarthy | Iron Mountain Daily News Bark River-Harris’s Tyler Racicot (2) leads off from first base as Iron Mountain first baseman Joey Dumais (24) awaits a potential pick-off throw at LiUNA Field in Iron Mountain on Thursday afternoon.
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Bark River-Harris baseball team dropped the opener to Iron Mountain (5-1) and earned a win in the nightcap (11-1) Thursday in Iron Mountain.
It was tied at one after the first inning, but the Broncos buckled down in the second and third, shutting out the Mountaineers and earning nine runs to lead 10-1 after three.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the second, Iron Mountain pitcher Evan Haferkorn walked Bark River catcher Johnnie Robinette to score Carter Zawacki and give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Four balls later Bark River’s Mason Bower walked across home plate. Max Hall then singled on a fly to right field allowing Aidan Johnson and Nick Javurek to add to Bark River’s score, 5-1.
The Broncos scored once more and forced a three and out from the Mountaineers in the bottom of the second.
“We got ourselves into some hitter’s counts and made the best of those opportunities,” Broncos manager Al Botwright said. “We made them work on the defensive side of the game.
Bark River added four more in the top of the third to seal the game.”
Hall finished with four RBIs and two hits, Johnson earned three RBIs and one hit, and Robinette and Travis Mack earned an RBI apiece.
“He (Hall) had a big game with two hits and four RBIs,” Botwright said.
Tyler Racicot pitched the distance for the Broncos and finished with two strikeouts, one run and four hits.
In the opener, the Broncos got an early 1-0 lead with a run from Javurek on a Robinette groundout.
Iron Mountain evened it up in the bottom of the third and took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
“Travis pitched unbelievably well,” Botwright said. “They hit a few singles that got through, and you combine that with a walk and error. They just played a little better in that first inning than the second.”
The Mountaineers added one more and held the Broncos to the single run in the first.
Robinette earned the Broncos’ sole RBI, and he, Hall and Johnson all finished with one hit.
Travis Mack took the loss for the Broncos over four innings, allowing three hits, four runs and fanning eight.
“In both games, we had outstanding pitching,” Botwright said. “We only had to pitch two guys — Travis Mack, he went four, and Tyler Racicot came in for one (in the first). I started Racicot the second game, and he went four innings. Both of them pitched very well. They kept us in the ball game both times.”
The Broncos host Lake Linden-Hubbell for a doubleheader Saturday.
