POWERS — The North Central Jets boys basketball team (3-5) picked up a 68-16 win over the Hannahville Soaring Eagles (6-4) Monday night in Powers.

“It’s fantastic,” said Jets coach Mike Malone of the win. “We had the round-robin tonight. Everybody got to get on the floor. Everybody got to score … All our guys are jacked up about it.”

The Jets opened the game with an 11-0 run bookended by two-point shots from Wyatt Riley — who scored a career-high 12 points — and Jesse Sampson, who also put up 12 for North Central.

With eight games under their belt and three wins, the North Central Jets appear to be coming into their own.

“We’re doing pretty well,” said Malone. “We still have lots of things to work on, but we’re gradually getting better as the weeks progress.”

The Jets, in addition to Riley and Sampson, had Luke Gorzinski (14) and Dylan Plunger (11) also break the 10-point mark for the team.

“We all played really, really, well,” said Malone. “Luke did a really good job getting to the rim early, and Ian (Gorzinski) played fantastic defensively, keeping that left hand up on the shooter.

“It was good. It was a really good performance.”

To the Soaring Eagles’ credit, the team never gave up despite what the scoreboard read.

“We definitely are a team that’s going to fight,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “I know it’s going to sound weird when you lose a game by 52, but we don’t really care what the scoreboard says.”

Eagle noted that the team was a bit lost in the opening moments of the game.

“We were a little bit deer in the headlights … This is a new atmosphere for them, and it showed in the first quarter right off the bat,” he said. “We put up a little fight there toward the end of the first quarter. Then, in the second quarter, it got a little bit out of hand.”

Eagle also gave kudos to the Jets, saying they are a disciplined and well-coached team.

“(We’re) just thankful we get to play the game,” Eagle said. “Again, I’m not super upset about this. It’s just good to play basketball this year.”

Hannahville is back in action Friday and Saturday against Ojibwe Charter in Hannahville. The Jets take on the Rapid River Rockets in Powers tonight.
