Esky gymnasts head to regionals on March 20

NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba gymnastics team is headed for regionals after taking second in a quad meet at Negaunee Wednesday with a score of 125.1. The Eskymos were led by Marquette with 127.36 and followed by Negaunee (102.03) and Superior 7 (64.65).

“We had a great meet last night, scoring 125.1 for our third time this season (finishing) with over 120 points, which means Escanaba will be going to regionals in Rockford as a team,” Esky coach Theresa Pascoe said. “I’m so proud of this team from watching them going through the motions during routines to now where they are performing. I see progress being made at each practice, and now is the time to change our tumbling passing and get ready for the spring floor at regionals.”

Escanaba’s Lizzy Sliva earned third in all-around with 32.25 as well as a second-place finish on bars (7.85), third place on vault (8.85) and the fifth spot on floor (8.05).

“Lizzy Sliva continues to lead this team in a positive way with encouragement and advice to help these younger girls keep their frame of mind positive,” Pascoe said. “It is very easy to get wrapped up in the negative when you’re afraid to try new skills.

“Lizzy’s vault was a little off, but (it was) nothing that she can’t change. Her routine on bars was clean, and her dismount was beautiful.”

Caitlyn Davenport came in just two spots behind Sliva on all-around with a 31.20 fifth-place slot. She also earned a bronze on floor (8.5).

“Caitlyn Davenport is starting to come back around and vaulted for the first time in weeks,” Pascoe said. “She may not be confident yet in her tumbling ability, but her jumps and leap series continue to get her the points she needs to stay on top.”

Riley Martin earned the sixth spot in all-around for the Eskymos (31.15), a fourth-place finish on vault (8.8) and two fifth places at Bars (7.3) and beam (7.85).

“Freshman Riley Martin has been really working on her execution,” Pascoe said. “She added more difficulty to her routines, and it showed tonight, placing on three of the four events plus all-around.”

The Eskymos’ Bridget Bichler also earned two fourth-place finishes on floor (8.1) and bars (7.4).

“Freshman Bridget Bichler stepped up her game tonight also with two beautiful routines on bars and floor,” Pascoe said. “She connected three skills last night on bars that she hadn’t been able to do yet this year, earning her a place on bars as well.”

Pascoe also mentioned the improvement she saw in the team as a whole.

“Abby Rexford had a good vault last night but will have to work to turn and twist her vault for more difficulty for our next meet,” she said. “Freshman Katelyn Rexford was the only Esky gymnast that stayed on the beam. All the girls each had one fall, so I’m seeing improvements on beam, which makes me happy.”

Escanaba faces regionals March 20 in Rockford.

“As I look to tonight’s results, I see girls’ names that haven’t made much of the paper this season, but last night, they stepped out of their comfort zone and gave me 110%.”
