STEPHENSON — Tessa Wagner led Carney-Nadeau past Stephenson and to the possibility of another district title after she scored 31 points and earned a triple-double to topple the Eagles 63-44 Wednesday in an MHSAA Division 4 district semifinal.

The Wolves started strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Eagles 21-5, and they went 12-10 in the second to lead 33-15 at the half.

“We came out pretty strong,” Wolves coach Ken Linder said. “We really moved the ball terrific in the (whole) first half really. We got good shots on, and we played a really good first half.”

Carney was only outscored in the third quarter by one and so was able to cruise through the second half to victory.

“It was a real good all-around performance,” Linder said. “I thought we came out and played really good defense in the first half especially. We did great offensively to get that lead at halftime, and we just played a good solid second half to win the game.”

Along with 31 points, Wagner collected 13 rebounds, 10 blocks, five assists and four steals. Taylor Kedsch chipped in 13 points, and Chole Grand earned 10 assists and three points.

“Taylor (Kedsch) hit some big 3’s,” Lind said. “They were timely 3’s. I thought Haley Ernest played a really good game for us. She kept everything controlled (on the floor).”

Stephenson was led by Paige Cappaert with 21 points and Morgan Anderson with 11.

“It was a good all-around team performance,” Linder said. “I’m just thoroughly happy with the way they came out and played tonight.”

The Wolves travel to North Dickinson for an MHSAA Division 4 district final Friday.

“Real good team,” Linder said. “Well-coached team. Ashton Hord is a very good player. She can shoot low inside, and she can penetrate. She’ll test us for sure.”
