ESCANABA — Escanaba senior Cannon Arnt used only 61 pitches for a perfect game as the Eskymos defeated Gladstone 10-0 here Tuesday.
That was the best game of his career,” Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said. “To do it against Gladstone is a really big deal and highly impressive and to have the control and not walk anyone was just fun to watch”
Arnt also had nine strikeouts in the contest and did a great job with pitch location and keeping the opponents guessing,
“This feels really great,” Arnt said. “I’ve never had a game like this before and to have it happen in my senior year at home against a rival is just awesome.”
Escanaba got the scoring started in the fourth inning as Graham Johnson had a lead-off double and Max LeDuc picked up an RBI as he grounded into a fielder’s choice to put the Eskymos up 1-0.
The Eskymos added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Lennox Peacock and Mikaiden Hughes both scored on wild pitches to extend the Eskymos lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Brian Boutilier drew a lead-off walk and scored on an RBI-single by sophomore Bryce Bichler. Brody Ison singled to score a run and Peacock reached on an error to score a run and extend the Eskymos lead to 6-0.
Senior Graham Johnson came through with his second hit of the game on a single that scored two runs putting Escanaba up 8-0.
“It was good to come out and get this win over Gladstone,” Johnson said. “We started out a little slow but Cannon pitched awesome and we started getting things going late and playing the way we know we can play.”
Boutilier got an RBI on his second at bat of the inning and then scored on a passed ball to end the game.
