HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos boys’ basketball team’s (14-1) undefeated streak came to an end Tuesday night at the hands of the Munising Mustangs (13-1) in a 60-51 loss in Harris.
“It feels good,” said Mustangs head coach Terry Kienitz. “We’re getting late in the season. We only got one game left after this. So, we’re going into districts, and it’s just nice to keep getting wins and playing good basketball.”
Munising got off to a great start in the game and never looked back. By the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs had jumped out to an 18-6 lead. At the half, they led 27-15.
At the start of the fourth, Munising led the Broncos 43-27, but Bark River still had some gas left in the tank.Scoring 24 points in the quarter, the Broncos brought the game back within three points with just over 40 seconds remaining.
However, with every intentional foul to stop the clock, Munising’s Kane Nebel, who totaled 23 points, didn’t crack under pressure from the free throw line.
Nebel was 8-10 in the quarter — and game — to ensure the Mustangs kept the lead.
“That’s always big,” said coach Kienitz on Nebels’ free throws. “Not bad for a sophomore to step up and knock down those big free throws in one of the biggest games of the year for us.”
Sam Brown also broke the 20-point mark for Munising with 21.
Kienitz credited a team effort for the win.
“I thought everybody worked really hard, the whole starting five,” he said. “We got some good minutes off a couple guys on the bench, too.
“It was a total team effort, that’s for sure.”
It was a game of missed opportunities for the Broncos. While the team was solid defensively, they couldn’t get their offense rolling.
“I think we came out very flat the first two quarters,” said Broncos coach Marc Zawacki. “Second half, we certainly came out better. But when you shoot 8 for 24 on free throws … you don’t win many ball games down the stretch.
“That first half and missed free throws were probably the difference, obviously.”
Despite losing a perfect record, Zawacki said that was never at the top of the team’s list of objectives.
“You don’t get anything for an undefeated season,” he said. “So, that’s not what our goal is here. It never has been.”
Trenton Wood-Keshick led the Broncos’ scoring with 22 points. Nick Javurek had 11.
“Sometimes you learn more in a loss than a win,” said Zawacki. “So, we’ll certainly learn from this as well as we did with the other ones.
“Hats off to Munising. They came to play. Us in the first half, not so much.”
The Broncos host the Carney-Nadeau Wolves in Harris tonight while the Mustangs, which won the JV game 40-37, wrap up their regular season against Pickford Thursday in Munising.
