STAMBAUGH — It was all about sync Monday in Stambaugh as the West Iron County (9-8) girls basketball team took advantage of Bark River-Harris’ lack of it to earn a 52-40 victory in an MHSAA Division 3 opener.
“We played four great quarters of basketball tonight,” Wykons coach Eric Shamion said. “Our kids were very engaged on defense. I thought we defended their perimeter shooters and rebounded the ball well.”
A slow start — just five points in the first quarter — was an early sign the Broncos (14-5) might be out of sync.
“We started slow,” Broncos coach Matt Richer said. “We just couldn’t get into rhythm tonight. We had a really good second quarter. We couldn’t hit shots in the second half. We only made six total shots in the second (half). We were getting traction, but we just couldn’t knock them down.”
One of the main issues Richer saw was the Broncos’ trouble on the boards and defense.
“We got out-rebounded by a ton,” he said. “We also had trouble boxing out. I give (West Iron County) credit. They were physical.”
Cara Zawacki led the Broncos with 10 points and two treys.
“We had a great season, but in tournament time, someone has to lose,” Richer said. “We didn’t play our best, but the girls worked hard. We had a great season.”
The Wykons were led by Jordan Shamion with 16 points and 14 rebounds to earn a double-double and Tori Bociek with 13 points.
“Avery Bociek had a big second quarter with eight points,” coach Shamion said. “Jordan Shamion had a monster game with 16 points and 14 rebounds.”
The Wykons travel to Iron Mountain Wednesday for a Division 3 district semifinal against Iron Mountain.
