Boys

Carney-Nadeau at Bark River-Harris

HARRIS — The fourth-ranked Bark River-Harris boys finished their regular season on a positive note here Wednesday night in a 50-33 basketball victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves.

BR-H led 15-9 after the first quarter and 27-12 at halftime.

“We had a game plan and stuck with it,” said BR-H coach Marc Zawacki. “I think our size was a factor. We took away their second chance opportunities. I thought the guys did a nice job on the boards. We settled down in the second quarter and didn’t turn the ball over as much. This was a nice win.”

Nick Javurek led the Broncos (15-1) with 15 points. Joey Stein and Carter Zawacki had 11 apiece.

The victory enabled BR-H to bounce back from Tuesday’s 60-51 loss to second-ranked Munising.

“It’s certainly nice to come back after a loss like that,” said coach Zawacki. “The guys came out hungry.”

Beau Koffman had 14 points for the Wolves, who hit 12-of-51 field goals.

“We didn’t shoot very well,” said C-N coach Paul Polfus. “They played more zone, and we struggled against that. We’ve struggled off and on with shooting all year. Although, I thought we did a pretty good job passing and swinging the ball.

“They were pretty well balanced and moved the ball well. They did the things we knew were coming. There are times we need to be more physical and not shy away from that kind of thing.”

BR-H, which also won the jayvee game, hosts Manistique in its Division 3 district opener Tuesday. The Wolves (7-8) host Mid Peninsula in their regular-season finale Friday.

Girls

Bark River-Harris at Munising

MUNISING — The Bark River-Harris girls wasted little time taking charge here Wednesday night in a 66-34 basketball rout of Munising.

BR-H led 22-12 after the first quarter and 37-20 at halftime.

“I was concerned about the road trip,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “I kind of wondered how the girls would come out. Cara (Zawacki) scored eight points, and Allison (Richer) had seven in the first quarter, which kind of got us going. Everybody scored, which was pretty cool. We worked on some things in preparation for the (Division 3) district.”

Allison Richer led the Broncos (14-3) with 12 points and four assists. Kassidy Roll added 10 points, and Morgan Cappaert grabbed 11 rebounds. Jenna Matson paced the Mustangs (4-8) with 11 points.

“We wanted to make sure Matson didn’t get off to a good start,” said coach Richer. “We got her in foul trouble and held her to five points in the first half. We played real well in all four quarters. I like the way we came out. We were shooting the ball good in the first quarter. Kassidy had a nice game. Hopefully, she’s back on track. She was getting a lot of good looks down low from her teammates. She also earned a few by getting rebounds.”

BR-H, which dropped the JV contest 36-35, hosts fifth-ranked Escanaba in a regular-season finale Friday, and Munising hosts Norway in its last regular-season game.

Gladstone at Marquette

MARQUETTE — The Gladstone Braves girls’ basketball team (8-5) defeated Marquette 43-24 Tuesday night in Marquette.

Leading the Braves in the win was Megan Crow (16 points, 12 blocks, 18 rebounds) with a triple-double.

“Crow dominated the paint,” said Braves coach Andy Cretens. “Our guards did a tremendous job closing out, getting in gaps, and taking away the three-point line.”

Gladstone kept Marquette from scoring any threes during the game.

“Jamisyn Bergeron hassled their guards all night while Alaina Trudeau and Claire van Ginhoven stayed disciplined on Millado and Worchock — holding them to a combined 8 points,” said Cretens. “Alaina has instantly made us a better basketball team by just doing the little things well. She changes the dynamic of our team, and her teammates love having her on the floor. Jamisyn is a weapon on the defensive end and has a new confidence on the offensive end that is making us much harder to defend.”

Cretens added that the team had come together well on the offensive end in their last two games.

“I may sound like a broken record, but we have had some girls really step up for us in the absence of some of our key players due to quarantine,” he said. “We feel really good at this moment. We are feeling good about our play the past two nights. We are excited to get our girls back this weekend, and — most importantly — we are having fun playing a game we were not sure we were going to be able to play this season.”

Gladstone will play Escanaba in a district opener Monday in Gladstone.
