Four area players honored on Free Press’ All-State list
DETROIT — Four area players were honored by the Detroit Free Press Sunday on its annual All-State team list.
Gladstone’s Hunter Potier and Cameron Ballard were named to the Division 6 All-State team. Both athletes had previously been awarded All-GNC, All-U.P., and All-Region honors.
Junior Potier, a 6-foot-2, 225 pound defensive end, was named to the first-team. He had 12 sacks and 31 tackles in the 2020 season.
Fifteen of his tackles were for a loss.
“Hunter is the most dominant defensive player in the U.P. in my mind,” Braves coach Jeff Hansen said. “Opposing teams tried to run away from him.”
Senior Ballard, a 6-0, 180 pound wide recevier, earned an honorable mention. On the season, he had 10 catches with five touchdowns. Going into the seaosn, Ballard made the switch to receiver from quarterback.
“(He was) double teamed after the first couple of games,” Hansen said of Ballard. “He was a ball-catching machine and averaged more than 10 yards a catch.”
Bark River-Harris senior Dylon Lippens was also honored and named to the Division 8 All-State team, while junior Dom Ortega — who was the West-PAC Iron Division Lineman of the Year — earned an honorable mention.
