MUNISING — Nobody said it’d be easy, but the Mid Peninsula Wolverines rallied past the Rapid River Rockets 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 16-25, 25-13, 15-10) in a Division 4 district volleyball opener here Monday night.

The teams had split their regular-season meetings.

“It’s always hard to win that third meeting,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “It was a nail-biter, a little too close for comfort. Our serving was poor in the third set. Then, it got better in the fourth. Once our serving got better, other things started going better. Our seniors had been there before, but this was a new experience for many of the girls. I think they may have had the jitters. Although, Rapid River came to play.”

The Wolverines (8-4) return to Munising to face Superior Central in Thursday’s title match.

MId Pen senior Daisy Englund collected nine service aces, four kills, 21 assists and 14 digs. Landry Koski tallied 18 kills, seven blocks and 10 digs. Allyson Lancour had nine kills, two blocks and nine digs and Kora Prater had 13 digs.

“Daisy left everything on the floor,” said Kayser. “Daisy, Landry and Ally had real good matches. Everyone is playing her role. We’re playing well as a team.”

Gabby Moss led the Rockets (6-4) with 10 kills, two blocks and six digs. Addie Christoff added seven kills, and Emily Goodacre had 27 assists.

“In the fourth set, we had too many errors,” said Rockets’ coach Kristy Kerstner. “No. 13 (Englund) had a tough jump serve, and we had a lot of serving errors. We had a lot of good volleys until the fourth set. Addie had a good match. She hit the corners. We had a pretty decent season, although we had a lot of ups and downs and too many errors in the last set.”
