Rockets top Cougars

RAPID RIVER — Senior Emily Goodacre provided Rapid River with a seven-point service run in the third set here Tuesday night, helping the Rockets surge to a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16) volleyball triumph over the Superior Central Cougars.

The Rockets were ahead 14-12 before getting a sideout on a passing error.

Goodacre then hit an ace during her run as the Rockets built a 22-12 advantage.

“We shuffled our lineup a little,” said Rockets’ coach Kristy Kerstner. “We started a little slow, then got some of our energy back in the third set. We did okay finishing the match, only we didn’t have as much energy as we normally do.”

The Rockets finished that set on a Cougars’ hitting miscue and gained a 12-4 lead on a kill by junior Addie Christoff in the fourth.

A kill by junior Riley Johnson enabled the Cougars to get a sideout but they still trailed 12-5.

Superior Central, fueled by a five-point run by sophomore Riley Moore, rallied to tie the score at 14 before a hitting miscue foiled the Cougars.

The Rockets finished the nightcap with an 11-2 run, sealing the verdict on another Cougars’ hitting error.

“We were struggling with our serves, and that’s what kept us out of it,” said Cougars’ coach Kris Bray. “We also struggled with couple of their servers. We just weren’t playing our game.”

The Cougars took a 6-3 lead in the opener when Johnson blocked a shot by junior Gabby Moss.

Rapid River rallied to gain the upper hand, taking a 10-7 on a Cougars’ hitting miscue.

The Rockets extended their lead to 16-10 on back-to-back aces by senior Myah Pearson.

Superior Central, however, rallied to tie the score at 17 before committing a passing error, which enabled Rapid River to regain the lead.

The Cougars took a 21-20 lead on a Rockets’ passing miscue, then committed a net violation, allowing the Rockets to tie the score.

A block by Pearson sent the Rockets ahead to stay. A Cougars’ hitting error and a kill by sophomore Monica Thibault then made it 24-21.

Senior Stella Charlebois tipped the ball over the net for a kill, and the Rockets committed an error, enabling the Cougars to pull within 24-23.

The Rockets, however, secured the opener on a kill by Thibault.

“Monica had a good match,” said Kerstner. “She really stepped up at the net and did real good serving, too.”

The second set was tied at 12 prior to a kill by Johnson, which gave the Cougars a 13-12 lead.

Superior Central extended its lead to 23-17 on a Rockets’ serving miscue.

Rapid River climbed within 23-20 on a kill by Moss before it committed a two-hit violation.

Johnson closed out the second by tipping the ball for a kill.

Moss led the Rockets with seven kills, two blocks and eight digs. Thibault added six kills, and Christoff had five kills and a block. Goodacre collected 15 assists. Sophomore Aiyana Semear also had eight digs.

Johnson finished with 11 kills and three blocks, and junior Charlotte Charlebois had 12 assists.
