Prep poll nearly unchanged

ESCANABA — Marquette (5-1) retained top spot in the recent U.P. football poll for 11-player teams voted on by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association with 25 votes after a 28-6 win over Calumet Friday.

Sault Ste. Marie (4-2) moved up a spot to second with 17 votes, overtaking and bumping Kingsford (3-2) down to third with 16, after a shut-out win against Cheboygan (60-0) Friday.

The Flivvers picked up a loss against Menominee Friday due to forfeit due to COVID-19.

Menominee (4-2) broke out of last week’s three-way tie to rise to fourth with nine votes.

Following the Maroons are Houghton (2-2) at fifth — having dropped a place — with four votes, and West Iron County (6-0) at sixth with two. The Wykons added a 36-22 win Friday against St. Ignace.

Rounding out the last two spots were Iron Mountain (5-1) — who took its first loss due to a forfeit to Manistique Friday — and Calumet (2-3) in a one-vote tie for seventh.

Pickford (5-1) still stayed ahead of North Central (6-0) in the eight-player division with 24 votes and a win by forfeit against Brimley Friday.

The Jets remained in second with three fewer votes (21) and a 50-8 victory over Stephenson.

Cedarville (5-1) retained its third spot with 14 votes and a 20-6 win over Rudyard.

Coming in fourth was still Lake Linden Hubbell (3-3) with 11 votes, and Forest Park (4-1) followed at fifth with three. Munising (4-2) finished off the list with two votes.

In the recent AP Michigan prep poll, West Iron County (6-0) retained its spot at No. 8 in Division 8 with eight votes. The Mountaineers also received two votes but were unranked.

In the eight-player division, Adrian Lenawee Christian (6-0) took first place from the Jets with 64 votes, beating North Central by just one vote (63).

Pickford tied with Portland St. Patrick (6-0) in third with 50 votes, and Cedarville broke into the top 10 with a seven-vote tie with Mayville (6-0) for the tenth spot.

The Lakes were unranked but received five votes.
