Eagles down Jets

POWERS — The North Central Jets didn’t have an answer for a pair of opposing seniors here Tuesday night as they dropped a 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-17) volleyball decision to the Stephenson Eagles.

Senior middle hitter Paige Cappaert collected 10 kills, four blocks and six assists, and senior libero Justine Havelka hit five service aces for the Eagles in this Skyline Central Conference match-up.

“The way we played their middle hitter, it exposed holes in our defense, which is something I need to change,” said Jets’ coach Rick Mick. “They also had one girl who had a unique approach to her serve, and it threw the girls off. Although when they were attacking, our girls handled the back row real well.”

Havelka opened the third set with a six-point service run, including two aces, before the Jets got a sideout.

North Central, however, lost their serve on a defensive error, and Cappaert got a block on senior Tori Dani for an 8-1 Eagles’ advantage.

The Jets sliced their deficit to 10-9 on a two-hit violation and tied the score at 14 on a kill by junior Ashley Neuens.

Stephenson (7-6) regained the lead on a Jets’ hitting miscue and stretched its lead to 18-14 prior to committing a service miscue.

Neuens tipped the ball for a kill, bringing North Central within 18-16 before the Eagles began to pull away.

Kills by Cappaert provided the Eagles with two of their last three points, including one to end the match.

“Paige hit the ball very well,” said Eagles’ coach Kristi Miller. “She was on tonight. Our libero (Havelka) also did well, and Natalee (Kragle) is a pretty smart player. This is a boost for our team. Overall, the girls played well. Only, we had some hitting errors and need to clean up our passes.”

Cappaert’s serving also gave the Eagles a boost with an eight-point run for an insurmountable 20-9 advantage in the opener.

The Jets were within 14-12 in the second set before a kill by Genaveve Anders provided the Eagles with a sideout and three-point lead.

Back-to-back aces by Kragie made it 17-12 as the Eagles again started to pull away.

“We had 91 percent serving tonight, which is the best we’ve done all year, but we need to improve on serve receives and be more aggressive with our hitting,” said Mick. “We weren’t aggressive enough in the second set. Although, I thought we were more aggressive in the third. Defensively, I thought we played real well. The girls kept battling, and we’re happy about that.”

Senior Tori Dani finished 11-for-11 serving and recorded 10 digs. Neuens added nine digs and senior Cheyenne Borucki had seven.
