Wolves adapt, top Nordics
CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau volleyball encountered a new foe Thursday, but it was only peripherally related to volleyball. The Wolves adapted to having to wear a mask on the court to pull out a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-16) victory over North Dickinson in Carney.
“(North Dickinson) gave us some trouble,” Wolves coach Steve Kedsch said. “They hustled really hard and kept balls in play. It took a little while for us to adjust to that tonight. Once we made that adjustment, the kids did a good job.”
The Wolves stayed even across three sets and staying ahead of the Nordics. Kedsch counted the team’s performance as progress.
“We started passing a little better, and we got some good swings on the ball tonight,” he said.
“We did a good job serving again tonight with 17 aces as team.”
One of the unexpected hurdles for Carney was the MHSAA clarification that players participating in some sports — including volleyball — must wear a mask at all times, even on the court.
“We had a little struggle tonight with masks,” Kedsch said. “We’re just such a team (that relies on) communication on the court. It was difficult, but it’s just something we have to adjust to.”
Carney (who’s JVs won 2-1) travel to Rapid River Thursday.
