RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River Rockets regained the momentum when they seemed to need it most here Thursday night in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-18) volleyball victory over the Mid Peninsula Wolverines.

Rapid River gained a seemingly comfortable 20-10 lead on a kill by Gabby Moss in the third set.

Mid Pen then got a sideout and rallied to tie the score behind a nine-point service run by Patty Salmi in this non-conference match.

The Rockets (1-1) then regained the lead at 22-20 on a service ace by Emily Goodacre before the Wolverines went ahead 23-22 on a Rockets’ passing error.

The third set was tied at 24 following a service error by the Rockets.

A kill by Addie Christoff then gave the Rockets a 25-24 lead before a kill by Moss secured that set.

“Pulling out the third set provided a spark and we came out with more fire in the fourth set,” said Rockets’ coach Kristy Kerstner. “The was only our second match. We’re still trying to find ourselves. We had some real good hitting and the girls covered well. We also had some big hands at the net and blocked pretty well. Only, we’re still struggling with moving our feet.”

The Rockets gained the upper hand early in the fourth and led 18-11 following a hitting miscue by the Wolverines (1-2).

Mid Pen trimmed its deficit to 19-15 on a kill by Allyson Lancour.

Rapid River, however, didn’t allow the Wolverines to get any closer.

“We dug ourselves in too deep a hole at times,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “We started real good, then Rapid River got the momentum. They were serving hard and we had a hard time reacting to it. We’re happy with how strong our play was at the net. We did a lot of hitting, but the shots weren’t dropping for us.”

Mid Pen led 18-6 in the opener. The Rockets responded with a 15-3 run, climbing within 22-21 on a kill by Christoff.

The Wolverines took a 24-21 lead on passing and service errors before the Rockets got a sideout and pulled within 24-23 on an ace by Cici Pilon.

After pulling out the first set, the Wolverines took a 6-2 lead in the second on Mid Pen hitting error.

The Rockets trailed 12-6, continued before they began to whittle away at their deficit. They went ahead for good at 16-15 following a kill by Moss.

“This is not typically the way we play,” said Kayser. “It was just an off night. We need to develop some team chemistry. Once we do that, we’ll be all right. We’re just grateful to be playing volleyball. Hopefully, we can get a whole season of it and the girls need it.”

Moss recorded four blocks and Christoff had 16 digs for the Rockets, who also won the jayvee match (25-18, 15-25, 15-9) and host Stephenson Monday.

Lancour finished with seven kills, five blocks and eight digs and junior Landry Koski added four kills and six blocks for the Wolverines, who host Munising Wednesday. Shae Lampinen tallied 13 digs and senior setter Daisy Englund had nine assists and six digs.

Mid Peninsula — Lampinen (three aces, three assists, 13 digs); Englund (two aces, nine assists, six digs); Salmi (two aces, two digs); Lancour (one ace, seven kills, five blocks, eight digs); Koski (one ace, four kills, six blocks, three digs); Prater (one ace, one kill, 16 digs); Croasdell (one kill).
