Eskymos tennis edges Kingsford

KINGSFORD — The Escanaba girls tennis team swept singles and scraped a doubles match to avoid a hung result here Thursday as the Eskymos defeated Kingsford 5-3.

It was No. 3 doubles where a tough three-set win from Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell earned the win for the Eskymos against Kingsford’s Brooke Bittiner and Macy Holmes.

“On the doubles side, we were able to get a tough three-set win at No. 3 doubles,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “It was a close match all the way through that could have gone either way. Delaney and Leslie really rallied in the 3rd set and played good fundamental tennis to get the win.”

The Flivvers took control of the rest of the doubles matches, with Teagan Petschar and Lizzy Cross defeating Esky’s Erica Moore and Madi Mishica at No. 1 doubles, and the Flivvers’ Liz Penegor and Jenna Olkkonen finishing off McKenna Bullen and Lilia Hughes at No. 2.

At No. 4, Kingsford’s Mryanda Golla and Karlee Hulkkonen perserved a tight first set and cruised through the second against Sam Manninen and Anna Valiquette of Escanaba.

For singles, the Eskymos’ Jacey Moreau finished off Maggie Meneghini at No. 1, and at No. 2, Sophia Derkos shut out the Flivvers’ Maegan Dooley.

At. No 4, Esky’s Amanda Beem held on against Kingsford’s Ashley Demay.

“We swept singles today with really good tennis from No. 1 through No. 4,” Ogren said. “All four girls played really well today and were able to get straight set wins.”
