Mid Pen picks up win on Senior Night
ST. NICHOLAS — A trio of timely baskets made a big difference for the Mid Peninsula boys here Tuesday as they broke away for a 46-24 basketball triumph over Hannahville on Parents’ Night.
Mid Pen was clinging to a 10-8 lead late in the second quarter before freshman guard Michael Englund drained a 23-foot jump shot from the left wing for a 13-8 cushion.
Senior Zach Englund added a layup and Michael Englund sank a 22-foot jumper from nearly the same spot for an 18-8 halftime advantage.
“It was a good game,” said Mid Pen coach Mark Branstrom. “It took a while for our guys to come around. We were just flat. The 3s before the half were huge.”
A fast break layup by junior Joe Larson brought the Soaring Eagles within 18-10 early in the third quarter of the non-conference contest.
The Wolverines (8-11) then outscored Hannahville 16-4 through the rest of the stanza for a 34-14 advantage.
“They’re a nice group of kids,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “I thought Mid Pen was a little more hungry than we were. We were kind of like deer in headlights. Hopefully, we’ll approach the next game a little different.”
Hannahville (15-5) took an 8-7 lead late in the first quarter on sophomore Shaye Halfaday’s 20-foot jumper.
A free throw by Zach Englund tied the score and his eight-foot jumper from the right baseline gave the Wolverines a 10-8 lead early in the second.
The score remained that way for nearly five minutes before Mid Pen closed the frame with an 8-0 run.
“They were quicker than we thought,” said Branstrom. “Their hands were great. I think they’re as good as the majority of the teams we played this year. The key is our kids were able to neutralize their fast break. I told the guys to keep their guys in front of them. Our seniors had a good year. They work well together.”
Zach Englund led the Wolverines with 17 points. Senior Dylan Trudell added 15 and Michael Englund finished with nine. Larson paced the Soaring Eagles with eight.
Mid Pen hit 17-of-48 field goals and committed 15 turnovers. Hannahville was a frigid 9-of-47 from the field and had 12 miscues in its regular-season finale.
“Anytime you shoot 19% from the field, something is happening out there,” said Eagle. “Some of it was probably great defense. We have the kids who can compete. They have quick hands. They can hold their own in a D-4 format. Mark’s a great coach. I’m sure there are things in his bag of tricks we haven’t seen. We knew this would be a battle. We’re looking forward to the next game.”
Mid Pen concludes its regular season at North Central Thursday then meets Hannahville in a Division 4 district opener March 11 at Rapid River.
