Area basketball players honored by Skyline Central Conference

ESCANABA — For the second year in a row, North Dickinson senior point guard Briana Smith was named the Skyline Central Conference Player of the Year at the league’s annual coaches meeting Tuesday.

Smith helped guide the U.P.’s fourth-ranked Nordics to an 18-2 regular season, which included a perfect 16-0 record in the conference to capture the league title.

Mid Peninsula senior guard Kennedy Englund and Carney-Nadeau senior forward Sandra Boulton were each unanimous selections to the All-Conference first team. Englund averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game, while Boulton averaged nearly 17 points per contest.

Joining them as a unanimous selection on the first team was Forest Park senior forward Mercedes Simmons. Other first-team selections include North Central junior Andie Arsenault, Munising senior Megan Matson, North Dickinson sophomore Ashton Hord and Stephenson senior Emily Johnson.

Second-team selections include Bark River-Harris senior Grace Peterson and junior Allison Richer, Carney sophomore Tessa Wagner, North Central senior Bree Arsenault, Rapid River junior Natalie Belanger, Mid Pen junior Daisy Englund, and North Dickinson seniors Hannah Clark and Skye Ledzian.

Simmons was also named the Defensive Player of the Year.

The rest of the all-defensive team consists of Smith, Wagner, Daisy Englund, Peterson, Hord, Stephenson’s Allie Schultz, Munising’s Taylin Behning, Rapid River’s Cecilia Pilon and Superior Central’s Emma Rutter.

Receiving honorable mention were Rutter, Bark River-Harris’ Sierra Debelak, Norway’s Kassi Gyselinck and Mackenzie Clifford, Forest Park’s Sydney Honkala, Mid Pen’s Camryn Croasdell and Chevy Koski, Rapid River’s Kristin Goodacre, and Stephenson’s Paige Cappaert and McKayla Johnson.

North Dickinson head coach Kirk Mattson won Coach of the Year and Cappaert won the free throw award, which goes to the top free throw shooter in the conference. Cappaert shot 78.8% from the line.

Stephenson received the team sportsmanship award and Behning received the individual sportsmanship award.
