Stephenson stifles Wolverines
STEPHENSON — Ice-cold shooting doomed the Mid Peninsula girls basketball team in a 43-34 road loss to Skyline Central Conference opponent Stephenson Tuesday night.
Kennedy Englund — a career 1,000-point scorer — was held scoreless as the Wolverines trailed 28-13 at halftime. She picked up three fouls in the first half, then got her fourth early in the third before fouling out in the fourth.
“We just want to get this one out of our system,” Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell said. “Move on, burn the tape.”
Daisy Englund led the Wolverines with 17 points. Chevy Koski chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds.
“Daisy and Chevy had decent games,” Croasdell said. “We didn’t play a bad game. We only gave up 43 points, but we usually score 50 or 60. When you can’t hit a shot, that hurts.”
Mid Pen shot just 9 for 50 from the field and was outrebounded 40-29. Stephenson (7-12, 7-7 SC) shot 18 for 52.
“Rarely have we ever been outrebounded this year. We just kind of lost our assignments there,” Croasdell said. “We switched defenses three or four times. They only had like nine offensive rebounds, but it seems like they scored every time they got one. They got good bounces, too. It wasn’t all just missed assignments.”
Mid Pen won the JV game 44-37 behind 18 points from Shae Lampinen.
The Wolverines (14-5, 9-5 SC) host North Central in their regular season finale Thursday.
