Rockets hold off Nordics
RAPID RIVER — It took until the fourth quarter, but the Rapid River boys basketball team was finally able to pull away for a 67-53 win over North Dickinson on Senior Night Friday.
The Rockets trailed the Skyline Central Conference matchup 17-16 after the first quarter and 33-32 at halftime before going up by three at the end of the third quarter and then turning on the jets in the fourth.
“Tough start tonight for us,” Rockets coach Mitch Hall said. “(North) Dickinson was going to leave it all out there. It took all four quarters. They’ve got a few weapons, and deep 3-pointers were big for them.”
Tyler Sundling led the Rockets (12-6, 11-5 SC) with 22 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Braydon Moss added 15 points, while Tony DeMars chipped in 14 points, four boards and three assists. Max Lenaker had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Cameron Schultz led the Nordics (4-14, 4-12 SC) with 18 points on six triples. Brennen Donaldson chipped in 15 points.
“I just kept telling our guys to keep shooting,” Hall said. “Braydon Moss had a big game for us — he was 5 for 6 on 3’s. I think we continue to show our weapons.
“Tonight, I also thought we learned a lot — how to fight through when things aren’t going well. We may need that experience down the stretch. It’s all about how you can finish as a team.”
The Rockets shot 25 for 48 from the field, held a 27-21 rebounding edge and committed 13 turnovers. The Nordics were 21 for 50 and had 10 miscues.
The Rockets, who won the JV game 66-26, visit Stephenson Tuesday.
