Javurek’s late triple wins it for Broncos

HARRIS — A deafening tidal wave of sound washed over the court as the crowd jumped to its feet after Bark River-Harris’ Nick Javurek sealed the game with a triple in the last few seconds. It was nip and tuck all the way, but the Broncos edged the North Central Jets 53-52 on their home court Friday night.
With 13.9 seconds left in the Skyline Conference Central contest, Carter Eichmeier made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Jets a 52-50 lead.
The Broncos (10-8, 8-7 SCC) quickly moved the ball down the court and got it to an open Javurek standing in the corner, and he drained a 3-pointer to give the Broncos a 53-52 lead for the first time since the second quarter with just six seconds left.
“I’m just feeling happy that we won,” Javurek said. “It felt good (watching the shot go in). I practice that shot a lot with my teammate Dylon Lippens. We’re always practicing those catch-and-shoots around the outside, so right after the game, I looked at him and said, ‘That’s ’cause of you buddy.'”
On the Jets’ rush to their basket, Ian Gorzinski was fouled by Carter Zawacki and found himself at the free throw line with two shots and just 1.6 seconds left.
“You can’t replicate (the environment) in practice,” Broncos coach Marc Zawacki said. “Especially the stressful free throws and things like that. That’s something we talked about after the game. We’re only going to grow from this experience, and that’s a positive.”
The crowd’s wall of sound reached a fever pitch, but both of Gorzinski’s shots bounced out as the game ended.
“Ian Gorzinski played absolutely fantastic tonight,” Jets coach Mike Malone said.
“Those free throws — if I had to choose someone to take two free throws at the end of the game after a technical foul, it would be him. He shot fantastic tonight, and he shot with confidence. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.
“I think this is good for us. You can’t really appreciate how an environment like this changes your psyche until you’re in it. You can’t simulate this, so this is perfect heading into the tournament and districts.”
For the first three minutes of the fourth, North Central (12-6, 12-5 SCC) stalled Bark River, building a 45-37 lead.
“Our rotations on defense were good at times, but at others, they weren’t,” Malone said. “They have a play where they run a fake hand-off ball screen and roll, and we got caught up (in that) a few times. When we switched to jump switching, they sometimes missed switches, but beyond that, we pushed tempo pretty well. We did some good things, but I’ve got to watch the tape.”
Javurek who kicked off a 6-0 run with a free throw to cut the Broncos’ deficit to 45-44 with 3:26 remaining. Bark River flipped the situation on the Jets, who went 4 of 4 from the free throw line but couldn’t make much else happen.
“When we get these — obviously any win is great — but we knew it was going to be a tight game,” coach Zawacki said. “I didn’t think it would be that tight. It was a back and forth game, and emotions are pretty high in a game like this. Any time you can come out with a win, it’s nice.
“I thought our defense played pretty well. We stepped up and helped the helper, we limited their penetration — that was one of the keys coming into tonight. (However), we want to shoot a little better from the line. That’s something we’re going to have to clean up.”
Trenton Wood-Keshick led the Broncos with 19 points. Javurek and Zawacki followed with 11, and Riley Bray chipped in 10.
The Jets were led by Noah Gorzinski with 21 points, and Luke Gorzinski notched 12.
