Braves overpowered by Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Despite a game-high 17 points from Gladstone center Megan Crow, Kingsford powered past the Braves 54-38 in Great Northern conference action Tuesday night in the Kingsford Middle School Gymnasium.

It was Senior Night for Kingsford, as the six senior basketball players were honored, as well as the Flivvers senior cheerleaders.

“The six seniors were spectacular — Olivia Olkkonen, Brooke Kriegl, Kate Cook, Ali Doolittle, Mandy Holmes, and Maggie Strehlow. I am happy they got to finish their last home game with a win,” said Flivvers head coach Lisa Harry. “We brought a lot of energy tonight and we were clicking on all cylinders, particularly in the second quarter scoring 21 points and holding them to nine.”

Kriegl, who led the Flivvers with 15 points and nine assists, drained a 3-pointer to end the half.

“It was a huge momentum boost going into the locker room,” Harry said.

Strehlow added 12 points, while Doolittle grabbed 10 rebounds.

“I thought our defense and rebounding was key to our win tonight. Doolittle and Cook had the assignment of fronting Crow and they did a phenomenal job. We had great help defense as well by the rest of the team,” Harry said. “We played very well. I am liking what I am seeing from every girl on this team. It’s an outstanding group of young ladies.”

Kingsford, which improved to 9-10 on the season, has a quick turn around when it travels to Ishpeming for a non-conference matchup Thursday night to complete the regular season. Gladstone hosts Iron Mountain in its regular season finale Thursday night.

The Flivver JV team defeated Gladstone to remain undefeated at 19-0.
