MENOMINEE — The Escanaba wrestlers finished the January portion of their season undefeated here Tuesday night, posting victories over Negaunee (56-21) and Iron Mountain (60-15).

Esky built a 27-0 lead against Negaunee by recording pins in four of its first five bouts, with all of those pins coming within 60 seconds.

Negaunee got on the board when Leo Helppi edged Scott Pendergraft 4-2 on a takedown in overtime in the 215-pound match.

“That was a great match,” said Esky coach Jeff Wright. “Scott pushed Helppi to the limit. We had a very good night. We wrestled hard.”

The Miners won the next two bouts by pin and climbed within 27-21 on a forfeit at 112.

Esky then got a forfeit at 119 before sealing the verdict on pins by Adam Reimer, Collin Arnt and Brock Viau.

A pin by Jackson Vizineau (152) gave Esky a 6-0 lead against Iron Mountain.

The Eskymos gained an insurmountable 42-0 cushion by taking the next six weight classes by forfeit. Then in a match-up of reigning Upper Peninsula champions, Arnt pinned Parker Stroud in 69 seconds at 130 pounds.

“That was the highlight of the night,” said Wright. “He’s a good wrestler, but Collin was very determined and did what he set out to do.”

Arnt was crowned 125-pound champion and Stroud took the 130 title three days earlier in Marquette.

The Eskymos resume in Saturday’s Northern Michigan Championships at Gaylord.
