BR-H boys fall to Norway

Matt “Sweets” McCarthy | Iron Mountain Daily News Bark River-Harris’ Riley Bray dribbles against Norway’s Jeffrey VanHolla (12) during Monday’s game at Norway.

NORWAY — With their fourth straight victory to move to 7-3 on the season, the Norway Knights defeated the Bark River-Harris Broncos 60-58 in Skyline Central Conference boys basketball action here Monday night.

Each team had three players in double figures on the evening, with Norway’s Logan Parolini leading all scorers with 20 points. Kody Hendricks netted 19 points, while Gannon Bray chipped in 11 points.

Bark River was led in scoring by Nick Javurek with 18 points, followed by Trenton Wood-Keshick with 14 points and Riley Bray netting 13 points in the losing effort.

For the majority of the game, it was a game of scoring runs, going back and forth from team to team.

Norway got out to a 12-2 lead in the early stages of the first quarter, with Hendricks netting 12 of his 19 points in the quarter. All of a sudden, the Broncos pulled themselves back into the game with a 14-7 scoring run of their own.

“I thought we had a great first quarter, followed up by a not so good second quarter,” said Norway head coach Jeff Gallino.

In the first three minutes of the second quarter, the Knights went on a 12-3 scoring run, but the Broncos stymied the Knights momentum with a 6-2 scoring run of their own to narrow the Knights lead at halftime to single digits.

The third quarter was the best played for the Broncos, outscoring the Knights in a back and forth quarter. Riley Bray hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give Bark River a one-point lead going into the final stanza.

In the final quarter, the score was deadlocked at 56 with 3:52 remaining. The score went back and forth once again.

Broncos head coach Marc Zawacki had this to say about his teams’ performance on the evening, seeing his team fall to 5-4 on the season.

“That was a problem for us tonight — we couldn’t stretch any of the leads we got, letting them slip away each time,” Zawacki said. “We’ve talked to the kids about our focus. Their were a couple of offensive sets we were trying to run at the end of the game, and our focus wasn’t there.”

Zawacki noted that his team wasn’t on the same page down the stretch and that needs to improve and change.

With approximately 1:10-1:15 left in the game, the Knights had the ball with the game tied 58-58. Gannon Bray beat his man off the dribble, and made what was essentially a game-winning layup with 52.6 seconds remaining.

“We ran that play earlier in the half and Gannon missed the layup,” Gallino said. “But we decided to go back to it, because Kody was getting double and even triple-teamed at times. (Nathan) Paulitch free throws at the end (of the game) were huge for us also.

“I also thought that the boys showed a lot of resilience by pulling through at the end of the game and getting the win. They made the stop they needed to make to secure the victory.”

The Knights host non-conference foe West Iron on Friday, while the Broncos head to Gwinn Thursday.

In the JV game, Norway moved to 10-0 on the season by defeating the Broncos 48-32. Nolan Amundson led all scorers with 20 points.
