Andrew Karl soars his way into Gladstone’s record book
GLADSTONE — Andrew Karl soared into school-record territory again as the Gladstone boys placed third in the Great Northern Conference track and field meet here Monday.
Karl jumped 14-6½ on this sunny and mild afternoon, surpassing his previous record by 1½ inches in the season-opener at Marble Athletic Field April 16.
“The weather helped today” he said. “The pole just bends better in warmer weather. This is huge. I cleared 14 feet at Manistique (in the Division 1 regional), but qualifying for the U.P. Finals was my only goal over there. It’s just a matter of running up poles and refining my technique. There’s always something you can work on.”
Marquette captured the GNC title for the fourth straight year with 126 points, followed by Kingsford 98 and Gladstone 63.
The Marquette girls won for the first time in three years with 149 points. They were followed by two-time defending champion Gladstone 98 and Kingsford 53.
Karl also helped the Braves win the 400-meter relay in a season-best 44.09 seconds.
Senior Carter Farnes added a first in discus with a personal-best throw of 140-1 and Marquette senior Nathan Cattoor also had a personal-best toss of 129-5 while finishing second.
Escanaba sophomore Andrew Hamlin took high jump (6-6) and anchored the winning 800 relay (1:35.22) and junior Zahn Anderson won shot put with a personal-best toss of 45-7¾.
Hamlin, who won high jump at 6-3 in the regional, has gone as high as 6-8 this season.
“That was awesome,” he said. “I didn’t expect that to happen. I was having problems with my foot at Manistique, but it felt better today. I’m happy with way I jumped today.”
Kingsford junior Gaige Sorenson captured long jump (21-1½). Karl placed second (19-11) and Hamlin was third (19-4).
Farnes was runner-up in high jump with a personal-best leap of 6-2.
“I thought we performed well,” Braves’ coach Gary Whitmer said. “Carter got two PBs and Andrew is ranked 13th in the state in pole vault. It also nice to see our 4×100 relay bounce back with a season-best time. The guys really ran well and our field events did well.”
Marquette showed its strength in the distances by taking the top three places in the 800 and 1600 and taking second through fifth in the 3200.
Junior Lukas Ballard copped the 800 (2:03.35) and junior Welly Fillmore ran a personal-best 4:37.03 while taking the 1600.
Kingsford junior Blake Tomasoski edged Sentinels’ senior Peter Argeropoulos on a lean for the victory in the 3200 with both finishing in a personal-best 10:21.76.
Senior Ford Richardson, however, was Marquette’s leader, taking the 100 (11.41), 200 (23.11) and 300 hurdles (41.0) and helping the Sentinels win the 1600 relay (3:38.74).
Junior Connor Dunn provided the Sentinels with a first in the 400 in a personal-best 55.51 and helped them win the 1600 relay.
Sophomore Maggie Karl ran a PB (17.49) while winning the girls’ 100 hurdles and took pole vault (10-0) and high jump (5-0), edging Esky freshman Rayne Martin on a tie-breaker.
Braves’ sophomore Molly Matthews captured the 300 hurdles (51.63) and senior teammate Lexi Gilbert ran a PB while taking second in the 3200 in a personal-best 13:34.06.
Matthews also helped the Braves take the 1600 relay (4:23.68) and junior Adele Ostlund won shot put (30-2).
“The girls just performed and couldn’t impress me more,” Braves’ coach Jim Murtha said. “Monday meets are always a challenge, but we had a lot of PBs which is a good way to go into the U.P. Finals. Marquette’s distances are very strong. Our handoffs in the 800 relay were perfect and our throwers really performed. Kamille Hughes had a personal-best in disc (85-7) and Adele has been very strong. We’re happy for Maggie getting a PR and winning the 100 hurdles, Lexi getting a PR in the 320, Molly winning the 300 hurdles and our girls taking four places in disc.”
Marquette junior Taylen Todd set a school record in girls’ long jump with a winning leap of 17-9½ and was runner-up to freshman teammate Jordyn Anthony in the 100.
Anthony took first in the 100 (13.2) and 200 (26.56) and helped the Sentinels win the 800 and 3200 relays. Todd, who was clocked at 13.47 in the 100, was also part of both relays.
Senior Ella Fure became a four-time GNC champion in the 1600 (5:28.76), took the 800 in a season-best 2:26.94 and anchored the winning 3200 relay (10:31.3).
“I ran in the 1600 relay as an alternate and we were only two seconds slower than our fastest race,” she said. “That felt really good. I’m very happy. I’m proud of Emma (Ziegler) for winning the 3200 and our 800 relay getting a PR.”
Zeigler ran a PB in the 3200 (12:10.11) and was part of the 1600 and 3200 relays.
“This definitely feels really good,” she said. “I think the warmer weather was a factor. This is also a confidence builder. My teammates really push me to get better and I’m proud of myself for what I did today.”
Kingsford senior Cassie Olson’s personal-best throw of 109-10 was more than enough to win disc and sophomore Maria Murvich was runner-up to Fure in the 1600.
“I had a season-best time in the 1600 which I’m happy about,” Murvich said. “Ella is having a beautiful season. I tried to keep her in my sight. We have a home meet with Menominee and Marinette Thursday which I think will help us.”
